The move comes as the two automakers look to ensure EV models qualify for the IRA tax credit.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-299887\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9669137141129422\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After becoming the<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/12\/28\/hyundai-has-a-card-up-its-sleeve-as-it-moves-to-dethrone-toyota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> third largest automaker<\/a> globally last year, The Hyundai Motor Group, including Kia and Genesis, looks to keep the ball rolling in the new EV era.<\/p>\n<p>Both Hyundai and Kia brands got off to a hot start by releasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/hyundai-ioniq-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IONIQ 5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/kia-ev6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EV6<\/a> EV models, based on the auto group\u2019s dedicated E-GMP electric vehicle platform.<\/p>\n<p>With several new releases from all brands under the Hyundai umbrella, including the IONIQ 6, Kona Electic, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV70, the automaker plans to become a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/04\/11\/could-hyundai-be-a-top-3-global-ev-producer-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top three global EV producer<\/a> by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>However, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/inflation-reduction-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act\u2019s<\/a> (IRA) standards set in for new EVs to qualify for the $7,500 tax credit, many Kia and Hyundai models have become ineligible.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/10\/14\/hyundai-will-begin-construction-on-its-first-ev-to-retain-us-tax-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breaking ground<\/a> on its first dedicated EV plant in the US in October, that facility isn\u2019t expected to become operational until 2025.<\/p>\n<p>With North America being Hyundai\u2019s single largest market, representing over a fifth of sales last year, Hyundai is looking for ways to ensure its EVs will qualify for the tax credit to secure its market.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Kia-EV9-tax-credit\" class=\"wp-image-297793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=150,100 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=350,233 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Kia-EV9-software-2.jpg?resize=140,93 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1350px) 100vw, 1350px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2024 EV9 GT-Line (Source: Kia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kia-hyundai-to-build-evs-in-mexico-for-ira-tax-credit\">Kia, Hyundai to build EVs in Mexico for IRA tax credit<\/h2>\n<p>The Governor of New Nuevo Le\u00f3n, Mexico, Samuel Garcia, revealed Kia\u2019s plans on his Twitter this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telediario.mx\/comunidad\/samuel-garcia-apuesta-kia-nl-inversion-billonaria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initially saying<\/a> Kia once again bets on Nuevo Leon with a \u201cbillion dollar investment to expand its plant and produce two Kia car models\u201d later editing out the billion.<\/p>\n<p>Another retweet from Garcia read, \u201c#Kia announces billion dollar investment to install another plant in #NuevoLeon where it will produce two new electric models in conjunction with Hyundai.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A translation of Garcia\u2019s own tweet reads, \u201cMore good news!
