{"id":49932,"date":"2023-05-18T09:03:12","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49932"},"modified":"2023-05-18T09:03:12","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:03:12","slug":"geely-aston-martin-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49932","title":{"rendered":"Geely doubles its stake in Aston Martin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/aston+martin\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Aston Martin&#8217;s<\/a> shares jumped nearly 25% on Thursday after the luxury carmaker announced a 234 million pound investment by China&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/geely\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Geely<\/a>, doubling the automotive firm&#8217;s stake to make it the third-largest shareholder.<\/p>\n<p>Geely will acquire about 42 million ordinary shares from Chairman Lawrence Stroll&#8217;s Yew Tree, currently Aston Martin&#8217;s largest stakeholder, at 335 pence each and subscribe for another 28 million shares at the same price, raising about 95 million pounds in cash for the British firm.<\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin shares, which closed at 231.2 pence on Wednesday, were trading at 267.8 pence at 1056 GMT, having risen as high as 288.0 pence.<\/p>\n<p>For Aston Martin, the preferred ride of fictional secret agent <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/james+bond\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">James Bond<\/a>, the investment paves the way to secure its long-term future and cut its net debt, which stood at 868.1 million pounds at end-March.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the century-old company, which has gone bankrupt seven times in its history,\u00a0said\u00a02023 would be its &#8220;peak year&#8221; for capital spending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They offer us a deep understanding of the key strategic growth market that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">China<\/a> represents, as well as the opportunity to access their range of technologies and components,&#8221; Stroll said about Geely in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Geely, which owns multiple brands including British sportscar maker <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lotus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Lotus<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/zeekr\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Zeekr<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Volvo<\/a> and \u2014 via a joint venture with Volvo \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/polestar\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Polestar<\/a>, had acquired a 7.6% stake in the Formula One team sponsor in September last year.<\/p>\n<p>That came after the carmaker rejected Italian investment group Investindustrial and Geely&#8217;s proposed funds of up to 1.3 billion pounds ($1.64 billion) in July.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our decision to increase our shareholding in Aston Martin reflects our confidence in the company&#8217;s growth prospects, its technologies and its management team,&#8221; said Geely Chairman Eric Li.<\/p>\n<p>The investment will give Geely a 17% stake in the company and entitles it to one board seat, behind number two shareholder Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Public Investment Fund (PIF).<\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin expects\u00a0profitability to improve\u00a0this year as it begins deliveries of its next-generation <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">sports cars<\/a> in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><style><![CDATA[.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }]]><\/style>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n <lite-youtube videoid=\"BYKkFrdozE8\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aston Martin&#8217;s shares jumped nearly 25% on Thursday after the luxury carmaker announced a 234 million pound investment by China&#8217;s Geely, doubling the automotive firm&#8217;s stake to make it the third-largest shareholder.
