{"id":50062,"date":"2023-05-19T12:03:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T16:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50062"},"modified":"2023-05-19T12:03:25","modified_gmt":"2023-05-19T16:03:25","slug":"panasonic-new-battery-plants-north-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50062","title":{"rendered":"Panasonic To Build New Battery Plants In North America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the Group Strategy Briefing on May 18, Panasonic Group CEO Yuki Kusumi announced that automotive batteries will be a priority investment area.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese manufacturer acknowledges strong demand for EV batteries (specifically for cylindrical-type cells) and high market growth potential, especially in North America.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s expected that the company will build a few new battery plants later this decade &#8211; at least two in North America.<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/panasonic-priority-investment-area-automotive-batteries-20230519-a.jpg\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/panasonic-priority-investment-area-automotive-batteries-20230519-a.jpg\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"1207\" height=\"679\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Panasonic noted that its current generation of battery cells already has more than three times higher volumetric energy density (about 800 watt-hours per liter) than the first generation 30 years ago (in 1994). The goal by 2030 is to achieve 1,000 Wh\/L.<\/p>\n<p>Panasonic&#8217;s cathode chemistry was the first to achieve less than 5 percent cobalt content (among high-nickel NCA\/NCM cathodes, as we understand) and according to Panasonic, a &#8220;cobalt free&#8221; cathode is within reach. Interestingly, nickel content will decrease as well.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important things is that Panasonic supplied batteries for some two million electric vehicles, without a single recall related to batteries.<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/panasonic-priority-investment-area-automotive-batteries-20230519-b.jpg\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/panasonic-priority-investment-area-automotive-batteries-20230519-b.jpg\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"1207\" height=\"679\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>The company currently operates one battery factory in North America &#8211;
