When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1843901\/1960-when-every-single-american-station-wagon-was-stunningly-beautiful-work-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">beautiful wagons<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a39372850\/what-year-was-peak-wagon-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">flying out of showrooms in huge numbers<\/a>, Oldsmobile was one of the biggest players in the longroof game, with many varieties of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a30589679\/1965-oldsmobile-vista-cruiser-too-luxurious-to-be-called-a-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">rocket-badged Olds Cruiser<\/a> seen throughout the land. The minivan and SUV killed the station wagon as a mainstream family hauler, of course, and the very last of the enormous rear-wheel-drive Oldsmobile wagons rolled off <a href=\"https:\/\/detroithistorical.org\/learn\/encyclopedia-of-detroit\/willow-run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the line in Ypsilanti<\/a> in 1992. Here&#8217;s a very rare example of <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1991-Oldsmobile\/1991-Oldsmobile-Full-Line-Prestige-Brochure\/slides\/1991_Oldsmobile_Full_Line_Prestige-66-67.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">that final generation of Olds Custom Cruiser<\/a>, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.picknpull.com\/locations\/175\/salinas-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">a Northern California self-service boneyard<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111626\/99-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For the 1991 model year, GM redesigned <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Motors_B_platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the full-sized B platform<\/a> (which had been more or less unchanged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2018\/12\/junkyard-find-1977-chevrolet-caprice-classic-coupe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">since 1977)<\/a>. Sharp, boxy edges became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/cetacean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">cetacean<\/a> curves, and three GM divisions got slick-looking streamlined wagons in the process. Chevrolet sold <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1991-Chevrolet\/1991-Chevrolet-Caprice-Brochure\/slides\/1991_Chevrolet_Caprice-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the Caprice Estate<\/a> while Buick offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a37780417\/1993-buick-roadmaster-estate-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the Roadmaster Estate<\/a>, with both models staying in production through 1996. Oldsmobile&#8217;s version was built for just the 1991 and 1992 model years, with just over 12,000 sold.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111538\/03-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Custom Cruiser name goes way back in Oldsmobile history, beginning as a designation for <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1941_Oldsmobile\/1941_Oldsmobile_Prestige_Brochure\/slides\/1941_Oldsmobile_Prestige-18-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">a line of upscale Olds 98s for the 1941 model year<\/a>. Oldsmobile began using the Vista Cruiser (originally Vista-Cruiser, with a dash) name on <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1964%20Oldsmobile\/1964_Oldsmobile_Wagons_Folder\/slides\/1964_Oldsmobile_Wagons-03-04-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">futuristic-looking midsize wagons with fighter-jet-style roof glass for 1964<\/a>, then <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1971%20Oldsmobile\/1971-Oldsmobile-Cruisers-Brochure\/slides\/1971_Oldsmobile_Cruisers-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">brought back the Custom Cruiser name for full-sized wagons in 1971<\/a>. The final Oldsmobile Cruiser was the 1996 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2013\/11\/junkyard-find-1989-oldsmobile-cutlass-cruiser-hell-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Cutlass Cruiser<\/a>; after that, you needed to get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2013\/08\/junkyard-find-1996-oldsmobile-silhouette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">a Silhouette<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/04\/junkyard-gem-1997-oldsmobile-bravada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Bravada<\/a> if you wanted an Olds-badged familymobile.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111624\/52-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Like the Vista Cruisers of the 1960s and 1970s, the 1991-1992 Custom Cruisers got a &#8220;Vista Roof&#8221; as standard equipment (the 1991-1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate got this roof as well, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1969_Buick\/1969-Buick-Full-Line-Mailer\/slides\/1969%20Buick%20Full%20Line%20Mailer-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">just as the Buick Sportwagens did<\/a> decades earlier).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111553\/23-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Under the hood, the 1991 Custom Cruiser received a 5.0-liter (305-cubic-inch) Chevrolet small-block V8 with 170 horsepower and 255 pound-feet. A 5.7-liter (350-cubic-inch) version was available as an option for 1992.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111555\/24-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1991-1992 Custom Cruiser was the last Oldsmobile available with both a V8 engine and rear-wheel-drive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111617\/43-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Like most Americans my age, I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1909421\/road-trip-1989-olds-custom-cruiser-and-california-highway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">covered many miles in Olds Cruisers<\/a>. It&#8217;s sad to see this one meet such a fate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111545\/12-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It racked up a respectable final mileage total before it got here, however.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111612\/39-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A thick coating of moss and lichens indicates that this car sat neglected outside for years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111614\/41-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Various rodents took up housekeeping inside during that time, and the interior smells\u00a0<em>bad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111616\/42-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The MSRP on this wagon was $20,495, or about $45,959 today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111606\/34-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Chevrolet Caprice Estate cost $17,875 ($40,084 after inflation) and the Buick Roadmaster Estate listed at $21,445 ($48,090 in today&#8217;s money).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/27111548\/17-1991-Oldsmobile-Custom-Cruiser-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It was built at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hemmings.com\/stories\/2013\/04\/29\/willow-run-assembly-plant-faces-the-wrecking-ball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan<\/a>, originally built to assemble <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviation-history.com\/consolidated\/b24.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">B-24 Liberators<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/08\/junkyard-find-horizon-blue-1949-kaiser-special\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Kaisers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/08\/06\/junkyard-gem-1947-frazer-manhattan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Frazers<\/a> were built there through 1953, after which GM took it over for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a30463122\/selling-the-first-successful-automatic-transmission-gms-hydramatic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">Hydra-Matic transmission<\/a> production and, eventually, vehicle assembly.
