{"id":50309,"date":"2023-05-23T09:03:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T13:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50309"},"modified":"2023-05-23T09:03:20","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T13:03:20","slug":"1139728_ford-three-row-ev-due-in-2025-350-miles-on-100-kwh-exec-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50309","title":{"rendered":"Ford three-row EV due in 2025: 350 miles on 100 kwh, exec says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford CEO Jim Farley on Monday teased the automaker\u2019s upcoming fully electric seven-passenger SUV as being \u201clike your own personal bullet train.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While that might not have been quite as extraordinary a picture as the Millennium Falcon with a back porch he likened Ford\u2019s upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1139158_ford-ceo-teases-2025-electric-pickup-as-millennium-falcon-of-trucks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project T3 electric pickup<\/a> to in March, the two descriptions together signal that the automaker is attempting to create something very different, if not downright disruptive, with these next-generation Model E electric vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Both are due to arrive in 2025, as the harbingers of Ford\u2019s Generation 2 EV architecture. And at Ford\u2019s Capital Markets Day on Monday, Farley, along with product development chief and CTO Doug Field, walked shareholders through what will make these EVs special.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"8\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100724840_m\" title=\"2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, 2019 LA Auto Show\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, 2019 LA Auto Show\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e_100724840_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, 2019 LA Auto Show<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Ford EVs: From scrappy to groundbreaking?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFord\u2019s Generation One was a scrappy endeavor: Low investment, really small teams, and pushing against a large organization that hadn\u2019t really endorsed or embraced EVs yet,\u201d summed Field, who nevertheless called them \u201cgreat products\u201d and partly why he came to Ford.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the F-150 Lightning, Ford went well beyond taking the F-150 and making it electric, Field explained, but also made it out-accelerate most sports cars, offered a frunk larger than that of most sedans, and staked out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134943_ford-f-150-lightning-will-team-with-home-solar-bypass-brownouts-here-s-how\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-in-market position for home backup power<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cNow our Gen 2 products we\u2019ll take a lot further. We\u2019ll invest in Gen 2 only in those places and segments where we know we can win\u2026starting with a full-size pickup that goes to the next level, and a three-row SUV,\u201d he explained. \u201cOur Gen 2 products will be unlike anything customers have ever seen; that starts by not trying to be everything to everyone and make every possible flavor for every individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOur Gen 2 three-row, which is also coming in 2025, will be equally groundbreaking,\u201d Field said, comparing it to the T3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100885835_m\" title=\"2025 Ford 3-row SUV - not going to be an Expedition EV\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2025 Ford 3-row SUV - not going to be an Expedition EV\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2025-ford-3-row-suv--not-going-to-be-an-expedition-ev_100885835_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2025 Ford 3-row SUV &#8211; not going to be an Expedition EV<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">No Expedition EV\u2014maybe not even an Explorer EV<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With that, Field described what\u2019s coming\u2014and he essentially dashed the likelihood of seeing Ford mainstays like Expedition or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132383_report-ford-is-developing-two-dedicated-ev-platforms-for-debut-by-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Explorer as an EV<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cSo think about a family that wants an affordable EV with an amazing experience for road trips,\u201d said Field. \u201cNow we could have converted an Expedition into an EV but it wouldn&#8217;t have made for a very good EV and it wouldn&#8217;t have made for a very good Expedition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To get 300 miles of range on the highway in an Expedition would have taken about 150 kwh of battery\u2014a big, expensive, heavy battery, he explained, suggesting that the resulting product simply wouldn\u2019t stand out enough versus ICE products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">EV efficiency is more important than range<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere&#8217;s a bit of an arms race in the industry to shove bigger and bigger batteries into large EVs to try and make them like ICE vehicles,\u201d said Field. \u201cBut the real battleground in electrification is about efficiency.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe optimize it rather than compromise it,\u201d summed Field. \u201cWhen we set out to build our Generation 2 three-row we started by changing the way we think about the tires with lower rolling resistance, squeezing every little drop of propulsion system efficiency out. And in computer simulations we took a bunch of mass out, we lowered the right height, changed the aerodynamics. In addition to Farley\u2019s bullet-train comment and the hints about aero, Field said that the product is beautiful and unlike anything in the segment, and it will be longer, sleeker, quieter and quieter vehicle with an extremely spacious interior.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Fields also said that its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135207_ford-model-e-unit-will-develop-ev-platforms-and-software-to-accelerate-electric-shift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">next-gen platform software and hardware<\/a> will launch first on its Gen 2 Model E products in 2025, enabling Level 3 autonomous-driving functionality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These will be high-production-volume models. Farley again teased the upcoming Ford electric truck as \u201ca technology tour de force that will transform the job site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Field talked about finding inspiration for these vehicles not just in the competition but \u201cfrom the limits of physics\u201d and from other industries\u2014and he, as Farley did earlier in the year, pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138654_ford-ceo-future-evs-radically-simplified-smaller-batteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radically simplified builds and build combinations<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe complexity goes so far in this new project that you&#8217;ll be able to count the buildable combinations on two hands,\u201d said Field, noting that includes retail and Ford Pro customers. \u201cSo when we commit to this kind of focus, complexity falls off in a way that completely changes the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That frees up all sorts of costs, but the most significant benefit is that Ford can do more with the product with that focus, Field explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What exactly that is remains to be seen, but
