BMW and PG&amp;E previously offered incentives to customers who charged their EVs at times when renewable energy makes up a bigger share of the electricity generation mix.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The current pilot program &#8220;is assessing how a typical home could maximize its renewable energy usage by switching between EV battery stored renewable energy and grid-provided renewable energy,&#8221; according to BMW.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100845271_m\" title=\"2023 BMW i4\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2023 BMW i4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw_100845271_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/bmw_100845271_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw_100845271_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw_100845271_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/bmw_100845271_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/bmw_100845271_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2023 BMW i4<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to BMW, test results show a BMW i4 eDrive40 capable of providing approximately 140 kwh of grid storage per day, with the capability of storing and returning 27 kwh of renewable energy to the grid. That&#8217;s about double the amount of renewable energy that a typical California household uses in a day.<\/p>\n<p>This program has grown out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1099502_test-pays-bmw-i3-electic-car-owners-to-let-utility-delay-charging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChargeForward<\/a>, BMW told Green Car Reports. That was BMW&#8217;s program helping i3 EV drivers charge at times that were smart for their local grid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100850888_m\" title=\"2022 BMW i4 M50\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 BMW i4 M50\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"765\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw-i4_100850888_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/bmw-i4_100850888_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw-i4_100850888_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/bmw-i4_100850888_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/bmw-i4_100850888_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/bmw-i4_100850888_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 BMW i4 M50<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Results so far show that drawing power from an EV battery\u2014sometimes referred to as a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system\u2014helps increase the amount of renewable energy used, according to BMW. Connecting an EV to a home allows for use of roughly double the amount of renewable energy that a typical California household will be able to use on an average day, BMW claims.<\/p>\n<p>This is also particularly relevant for California residents, as approximately 40% of all U.S. EVs are currently driving on California roads, BMW noted.<\/p>\n<p>BMW and PG&amp;E plan to follow up the pilot program with a &#8220;field trial&#8221; at BMW&#8217;s Mountain View, California, office and a fleet of vehicles equipped for V2G operation. They&#8217;ve extended their partnership to March 2026, but commercialization of the tech being tested could be farther off, BMW noted. The tech could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133060_home-solar-and-electric-cars-are-converging-and-it-s-about-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially well-paired with solar<\/a>, which peaks each day just before the greatest home-energy needs, giving EV-driving homeowners some degree of independence from the grid.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">So far though, Ford is the only automaker to offer a comprehensive package, allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134943_ford-f-150-lightning-will-team-with-home-solar-bypass-brownouts-here-s-how\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the F-150 Lightning<\/a> to effectively bypass brownouts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BMW and utility Pacific Gas &amp; Electric (PG&amp;E) have started testing technology that allows EVs to supplement the grid.
