However, the electronics manufacturing giant now plans to start 4680 cell production between April 2024 and September 2024 (via\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/panasonic-delays-production-new-tesla-battery-improve-performance-2023-05-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Reuters (Opens PDF)\">Reuters<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Panasonic has decided to delay production to enhance 4680 cell performance even further. The company has been working on producing 4680 battery cells for years in collaboration with Tesla but the two have yet to do so at high volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2020\/09\/25\/tesla-4680-cell-analyzed-sandy-munro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"introduced the new 4680 form-factor cells (Opens PDF)\">introduced the new 4680 form-factor cells<\/a>\u00a0at its Battery Day event in 2020. The automaker set up a pilot production facility for the cells at its Fremont factory,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2020\/09\/11\/tesla-fremont-factory-drone-video-shows-the-model-y-gigacast-machines-roadrunner-magic-cube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"codenamed Roadrunner (Opens PDF)\">codenamed Roadrunner<\/a>\u00a0at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Battery Day, both Panasonic and Tesla announced plans to set up a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2020\/10\/31\/panasonic-tesla-working-on-a-4680-cell-pilot-production-line-at-giga-nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"joint pilot production (Opens PDF)\">joint pilot production<\/a>\u00a0line at Tesla&#8217;s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. However, Tesla hasn&#8217;t commented on how many cells this pilot plant is actually producing.<\/p>\n<p>Panasonic has another pilot production line for 4680 cells at its factory in Wakayama, Japan. Tesla also started a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2021\/12\/21\/4680-cell-production-line-giga-texas-as-tesla-opening-party-in-early-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"production line (Opens PDF)\">production line<\/a>\u00a0for the cells at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas in 2021. Since then, the automaker has constantly upgraded the facility to speed up cell output.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tesla&#8217;s latest report on 4680 cells, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2022\/12\/27\/tesla-achieves-4680-cell-production-rate-of-868k-per-week-enough-for-1000-model-ys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"electric carmaker was producing 868,000 units of these cells per week (Opens PDF)\">electric carmaker was producing 868,000 units of these cells per week<\/a>. In February, Tesla CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/category\/elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Elon Musk<\/a> confirmed that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2023\/02\/07\/elon-musk-assures-that-the-cybertruck-production-will-start-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Cybertruck is slated to begin production (Opens PDF)\">Cybertruck is slated to begin production<\/a>\u00a0later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla is already manufacturing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2023\/05\/03\/tesla-cybertruck-alpha-prototype-interior-and-exterior-spotted-at-the-fremont-factory-in-new-pics-and-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"alpha prototypes of the Cybertruck (Opens PDF)\">alpha prototypes of the Cybertruck<\/a>\u00a0at Giga Texas.\u00a0Using Giga Press casting machines from Italian manufacturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2023\/01\/07\/huge-parts-of-the-9000-ton-tesla-cybertruck-giga-press-arrive-at-giga-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"IDRA (Opens PDF)\">IDRA<\/a>, Tesla is getting closer to the Cybertruck&#8217;s final production start each day.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker is continuously trying to scale\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/tag\/4680-cell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"4680 cell (Opens PDF)\">4680 cell<\/a>\u00a0production, both at Giga Texas and at its Kato Road building near the Fremont factory. However, it isn&#8217;t yet clear how many Cybertruck battery packs the facilities can support per week\/quarter\/year.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla&#8217;s internal 4680-cell production may not be adequate to supply enough cells for volume production of the Cybertruck. Previously, Tesla was aiming to scale up Cybertruck production in 2024, though it&#8217;s also unclear if this will be affected by Panasonic&#8217;s delays.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evannex.com\/blogs\/news\/tesla-cfo-zachary-kirkhorns-quiet-executive-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Tesla (Opens PDF)\">Tesla<\/a>\u00a0could discontinue the sale of Model Y with 4680 cells in them and divert the supply to Cybertruck production. Still, a Model Y has a roughly 70 kWh battery pack, while the Cybertruck is set to be much larger than the Model Y, requiring a larger battery pack.
