{"id":50524,"date":"2023-05-25T09:03:30","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T13:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50524"},"modified":"2023-05-25T09:03:30","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T13:03:30","slug":"bmw-determined-beat-tesla-own-game-bevs-top-priority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=50524","title":{"rendered":"BMW Determined To Beat Tesla At Its Own Game, BEVs Are Top Priority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BMW lost the US luxury sales crown to Tesla last year after three years of dominating the market, but the Bavarian automaker is determined to beat the US EV maker at its own game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company plans to add <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/668852\/2024-bmw-i5-debuts-295-mile-range-67795-usd-base-price\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22668852%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222024-bmw-i5-debuts-295-mile-range-67795-usd-base-price%22%7D\">competitively specced battery-powered models<\/a> to its lineup of sedans and crossovers over the next few years, increasing pressure on Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>BMW of North America CEO, Sebastian Mackensen, told <em>Automotive News<\/em> in an interview that the company&#8217;s main priority in the near term is &#8220;the transition of our business to expand into battery-electric vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Electric vehicles accounted for 5 percent of BMW&#8217;s US sales last year, and Mackensen is confident the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/657544\/bmw-group-expects-bevs-make-up-15-percent-its-sales-in-2023\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22657544%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22bmw-group-expects-bevs-make-up-15-percent-its-sales-in-2023%22%7D\">BEV share will &#8220;more than double&#8221; this year<\/a> and surpass the automaker&#8217;s overall sales growth in the US. &#8220;There&#8217;s still a healthy and robust demand for plug-in hybrids, but [BEVs] will drive demand long term,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While BMW is trying to get the right electric vehicles to the market, EV adoption is being held back by the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/657365\/us-starts-2point5-billion-funding-program-develop-ev-charging-infrastructure\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22657365%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22us-starts-2point5-billion-funding-program-develop-ev-charging-infrastructure%22%7D\">charging infrastructure<\/a>, Mackensen believes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Electric vehicles need to get charged. They cannot go to a fuel station and charge in three minutes. So we need charging infrastructure,&#8221; he said, adding that in order to drive market adoption to 50-plus percent, single-family homes cannot be the only charging solution. We offer a variety,&#8221; he explained, noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/bmw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">BMW<\/a> is a global company that operates in markets with a 10 percent EV mandate for 2030 or 100 percent.
