That said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142176_us-plug-in-hybrid-sales-hit-a-record-high-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 plug-in hybrid sales<\/a> hit a record high\u2014likely leading GM to wonder if it should revisit the business.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">GM revealed in January that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142159_gm-not-quite-all-in-on-evs-will-add-plug-in-hybrids-in-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to reintroduce plug-in hybrids<\/a>, but it didn&#8217;t reveal a timeline. GM&#8217;s Chevy Volt was a much-loved product, but GM president Mark Reuss, in 2020, made clear that plug-in hybrids were a &#8220;stopgap&#8221; it didn&#8217;t want to get into on the way to EVs. GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1127031_why-gm-has-put-hybrids-and-the-chevy-volt-in-its-past\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hasn&#8217;t sold a plug-in hybrid<\/a> in the U.S. since the Volt was withdrawn after the 2019 model year.<\/p>\n<p>Barra told the Detroit News that lack of sufficient charging infrastructure was a reason for the change in strategy, but that could also affect the real-world emissions of the new plug-in hybrids GM now plans to launch in a few years.
