{"id":73271,"date":"2024-06-12T00:03:33","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T04:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73271"},"modified":"2024-06-12T00:03:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T04:03:33","slug":"1143480_tesla-supercharger-ionna-going-big-on-ev-charging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73271","title":{"rendered":"As Tesla Supercharger plans stall, Ionna is going big on EV charging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla\u2019s recent pullback of Supercharger operations doesn\u2019t appear to have affected the plans of Ionna, the charging network for the U.S. and Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1140313_tesla-supercharger-network-rival-7-global-automakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directly funded by seven automakers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The charging network on Tuesday re-upped its commitment to build a network of more than <strong>30,000 high-power urban and highway-adjacent fast-charging connectors<\/strong>, and it hints that work is already well underway on the first of those as it anticipates its first U.S. charging stations will open in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>First announced in July 2023, with backing from <strong>BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis<\/strong>, Ionna officially started operations (and got its name) in February. CEO Seth Cutler was announced in February.<\/p>\n<p>Ionna noted in its original formation that it would have \u201ca focus on delivering an elevated customer experience,\u201d so expect a high level of attention paid to the interface, uptime, and reliability in general\u2014as well as the amenities at charging stops. It\u2019s fair to say that remote corners of big-box retailer parking lots will no longer suffice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The network has also already confirmed that it will be <strong>powered by renewable energy<\/strong>, with the capability for reservations and intelligent route planning, plus full support for <strong>Plug &amp; Charge<\/strong> technology from the start, meaning fewer needs for credit-card swipes and app handshakes. That network arguably helped accelerate the European EV market past America at a time when it was tracking behind it. Electrify America, which was created as part of the company\u2019s diesel-scandal penalty, has been entirely a VW operation, with the exception of a Siemens investment; but it does plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143061_electrify-america-ev-charging-network-2024-growth\">grow by 25% in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some Ionna locations may potentially be vying for federal NEVI funding alongside other networks\u2014or, perhaps, competing with the Tesla Supercharger network, depending on whether Tesla reactivates its Supercharger buildout.<\/p>\n<p>Much has happened to the business around charging since Ionna was originally announced, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1139944_nearly-half-of-shoppers-see-public-charging-as-an-ev-dealbreaker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV charging reliability<\/a> has become a hot topic, and the industry has committed to a shift to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1140904_evs-from-these-brands-will-soon-use-the-tesla-nacs-charge-port\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla-based NACS connector<\/a> in future EVs\u2014meaning that a wide range of brands will soon be able to charge at <strong>Tesla&#8217;s Supercharger network<\/strong>, providing Tesla with an additional revenue stream.
