{"id":73281,"date":"2024-06-12T09:03:30","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T13:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73281"},"modified":"2024-06-12T09:03:30","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T13:03:30","slug":"european-union-to-hike-chinese-ev-tariffs-to-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73281","title":{"rendered":"European Union to hike Chinese EV tariffs to 38% &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS \u2014 The European Union moved Wednesday to hike tariffs on Chinese <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">electric vehicles<\/a>, escalating a trade dispute over Beijing&#8217;s subsidies for the exports that Brussels worries is hurting <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-summit-economy-competitiveness-us-china-5d4548e378a0326e59f70d90b3c24ac9\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">domestic automakers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission, the EU&#8217;s executive arm, said it would impose provisional tariffs that would result in Chinese automakers facing additional duties of as much as 38%, up from the current level of 10%.<\/p>\n<p>The commission said it reached out to Chinese authorities to discuss the findings of its <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-eu-subsidies-investigation-wind-7795793693138377537e0253821c8a9a\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">investigation into the subsidies<\/a> and \u201cexplore possible ways to resolve the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould discussions with Chinese authorities not lead to an effective solution,\u201d the new rates would take effect on a provisional basis by July 4, the commission said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Electric cars are the latest flash point in a broader trade dispute over what Brussels says is <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">China&#8217;s<\/a> unfair state support for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-trade-exports-imports-may-f8cdde75314f32e4a81a740c60024e9b\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">green tech exports<\/a> that also include solar panels, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">batteries<\/a> and wind turbines.<\/p>\n<p>Imports of Chinese-made EVs to the European Union have skyrocketed in recent years. They include vehicles from Western brands that have auto plants in China, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-tesla-ev-battery-shanghai-531a85cdd9c99e68b2e4f40d6d613d4d\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">including Tesla<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">BMW<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But EU officials complain that Chinese automakers like BYD and SAIC are increasing market share and undercutting European car brands on price thanks to Beijing&#8217;s massive subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The commission said an investigation it opened last year into China&#8217;s EV subsidies found that China&#8217;s battery electric vehicle value chain \u201cbenefits from unfair subsidization, which is causing a threat of economic injury to EU BEV producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The extra tariffs would vary by company. BYD would face an additional 17.4% charge. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/geely\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Geely<\/a>, which owns Sweden&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Volvo<\/a>, would be hit with a further 20%.
