{"id":73376,"date":"2024-06-15T09:03:47","date_gmt":"2024-06-15T13:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73376"},"modified":"2024-06-15T09:03:47","modified_gmt":"2024-06-15T13:03:47","slug":"1143529_musk-ev-batteries-from-suppliers-costs-less-vs-tesla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73376","title":{"rendered":"Musk: Buying EV batteries from suppliers costs less vs. Tesla&#8217;s own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in Thursday\u2019s annual shareholder meeting, called himself \u201ca helpful accelerant\u201d to the company\u2019s future, as shareholders approved a pay package for Musk valued at $46 billion based on current stock prices.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, one aspect that was due to change the company\u2019s trajectory, cut costs, and enable everything from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1129717_musk-battery-plan-will-enable-25-000-tesla-due-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$25,000 Tesla EV<\/a> in 2023 to mass-production of the Semi in 2021 hasn\u2019t yet arrived in 2024: the dramatic cost reductions of Tesla\u2019s 4680 cells.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith respect to our own cell production, we do see a path to cost parity by the end of this year\u2014a very difficult path to cost parity,\u201d Musk summed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Battery Day and 4680 aimed to halve the cost<\/h2>\n<p>While Musk is now talking about cost parity, it\u2019s a very different reality for Tesla\u2019s signature battery move, nearly four years after its September 2020 Battery Day. Tesla made the 4680 cells and its own future production of them the centerpoint of that event and claimed it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1129700_tesla-claims-breakthrough-cell-to-be-half-the-cost-could-supply-other-automakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make the breakthrough cell at half the cost<\/a>, on an energy basis, versus suppliers\u2014and boasted that it could even supply it to other automakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100812093_m\" title=\"Comparing 4680 vs. 2170 - Panasonic\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Comparing 4680 vs. 2170 - Panasonic\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/comparing-4680-vs-2170--panasonic_100812093_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Comparing 4680 vs. 2170 &#8211; Panasonic<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCurrently our 4680s cost more than our suppliers\u2019,\u201d Musk revealed on Thursday, as he noted the volatility of EV battery prices. \u201cThey cost more than the suppliers\u2019 today but they cost less than the suppliers\u2019 a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a bit of a feast-famine thing with battery cell suppliers, kind of for VRAM chips,\u201d he added. \u201cBut we expect to achieve cost parity, even be much lower than the supplier cell price today, by the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Tesla\u2019s big battery bet hasn\u2019t paid off\u2014yet<\/h2>\n<p>The cost of EV battery cells has indeed been a rollercoaster ride. After Battery Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138078_ev-battery-cost-soared-in-2022-hampering-ev-affordability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV battery cost soared<\/a> to new heights in 2022, hampering EV affordability. Lithium-ion battery prices dropped through 2023 and into this year, but they\u2019re not showing signs of stopping. Goldman Sachs analysts now anticipate a nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142497_2023-2025-ev-battery-prices-will-boost-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40% decline in EV battery prices<\/a> between 2023 and 2025, which in turn will boost sales.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100762377_m\" title=\"Tesla Battery Day - Bigger costs less\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Tesla Battery Day - Bigger costs less\" width=\"640\" height=\"356\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"570\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/tesla-battery-day--bigger-costs-less_100762377_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tesla Battery Day &#8211; Bigger costs less<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In so many respects, the economics of EV battery supply are looking very different than how they presented around Battery Day. There is now such a global glut in battery production, if you consider China, that China itself now makes enough batteries to cover all global EV production, according to an assessment earlier this spring by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. And in format, no other major automaker has yet committed to the 4680 cylindrical format (46 mm diameter, 80 mm height).
