Flying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/07\/04\/junkyard-gem-1989-cadillac-allante\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">an S-Class-priced model<\/a> between assembly lines in Turin and Hamtramck hadn&#8217;t worked out, so why not look to the European outposts of the far-flung GM Empire for the next Cadillac? That&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbsideclassic.com\/automotive-histories\/automotive-history-1997-2001-cadillac-catera-caddys-dead-duck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">how the Catera was born<\/a>, and I have found a rare first-year example in a North Carolina car graveyard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/edgecast-img.yahoo.net\/mysterio\/api\/9BE7DD66496CB87D0990F2330AEC64CDB33818021607D2BC74495FBC24BA1C9E\/autoblog\/resizefill_w1200_h675;quality_80;format_webp;cc_31536000;\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2024\/06\/03145736\/1997-Opel-Omega-Brochure-Image.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"675\" width=\"1200\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Across the Atlantic, GM&#8217;s Opel and Vauxhall were doing good business with prosperous European car buyers by selling them the sleek rear-wheel-drive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.club-opel.com\/sub-model\/opel-omega-b-18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Omega B<\/a> (whose platform also lived beneath <a href=\"https:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/Australia\/Holden\/1997-Holden-VT-Commodore-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the Holden VT Commodore<\/a> in Australia). Opel wasn&#8217;t a completely unknown brand to Americans at the time, since its cars were sold here with their own badging through Buick dealerships from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/04\/29\/junkyard-gem-1957-opel-olympia-rekord-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the middle 1950s<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/opel19751.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the late 1970s<\/a> (for a much shorter period, American Pontiac dealers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/09\/05\/junkyard-gem-1958-vauxhall-victor-super-estate-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">attempted to sell Vauxhalls<\/a>).
