That&#8217;s the automaker&#8217;s new initiative we heard about last month that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Mitsubishi<\/a> North America President and CEO Mark Chaffin said is &#8220;setting the stage for new powertrains and vehicles being introduced, new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">dealerships<\/a> being opened, and new technologies being developed to make the shopping and ownership experience faster, easier and more enjoyable.&#8221; The first hints of new product suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2024\/05\/16\/mitsubishi-delica-off-road-van-outlander-variant-truck-future-product-plans\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">a rugged plug-in hybrid van<\/a>, something else in the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/subaru\/outback\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Subaru Outback<\/a> segment, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2024\/04\/01\/nissan-and-mitsubishi-reportedly-working-on-a-1-ton-pickup-for-the-u-s\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">perhaps an electric pickup<\/a>. And after Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2024\/02\/08\/nissan-leaf-next-generation-gen-2026-model-year\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Nissan introduces a new-generation Leaf EV<\/a> for the 2026 model year, Mitsubishi&#8217;s supposed to get the Leaf for its own use. Based on a recent <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/trademark\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">trademark<\/a> renewal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whichcar.com.au\/news\/mitsubishi-lancer-could-return-electric-nissan-leaf-twin\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Australian outlet <em>Which Car?<\/em><\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a60824976\/mitsubishi-five-year-plan-revealed\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\"><em>Car and Driver<\/em><\/a> suspects this EV (highlighted in the image above) could be called <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/lancer+sportback\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Lancer Sportback<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Car and Driver<\/em> caught the fact that Mitsubishi renewed a trademark application <a href=\"https:\/\/tsdr.uspto.gov\/#caseNumber=98444873&amp;caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&amp;caseType=DEFAULT&amp;searchType=statusSearch\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">for the name Lancer Sportback<\/a> at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 12 of this year.\u00a0And speaking of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/lancer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Lancers<\/a>, the Japanese automaker applied <a href=\"https:\/\/tsdr.uspto.gov\/#caseNumber=98121345&amp;caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&amp;caseType=DEFAULT&amp;searchType=statusSearch\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">to trademark Lancer Evolution<\/a> on August 8 last year. The USPTO refused the registration, Mitsubishi filed an appeal that&#8217;s still under consideration.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Which Car?<\/em> doesn&#8217;t say why it believes Mitsu might apply the Lancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/tsdr.uspto.gov\/#caseNumber=88821746&amp;caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&amp;caseType=DEFAULT&amp;searchType=statusSearch\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">requested in 2020<\/a>) or Lancer Sportback name to its little EV, but notes that the automaker&#8217;s been reusing names around the world of late, such as Airtrek, Colt, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/eclipse\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Eclipse<\/a>, and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/eclipse+cross\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Eclipse Cross<\/a>. There&#8217;s more where that came from for us, <em>C\/D<\/em> also tabbing Mitsubishi&#8217;s trademark application <a href=\"https:\/\/tsdr.uspto.gov\/#caseNumber=98132684&amp;caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&amp;caseType=DEFAULT&amp;searchType=statusSearch\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">for the name Montero<\/a>, submitted last August and approved in February. That 4&#215;4 launched as the Pajero in 1981 and sold in the U.S. as the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/montero\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Montero<\/a> (and the Dodge <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/raider\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Raider<\/a>). The carmaker hasn&#8217;t sold a Montero here since 2006, and ended Pajero production in 2021. A new model called the Pajero Sport filled the gap in the lineup, but that SUV is based on Mitsubishi&#8217;s Triton pickup sold in overseas markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got a while to wait to figure out what&#8217;s up. The new Leaf is expected to be a mini <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Nissan<\/a> Ariya based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2024\/04\/25\/nissan-concept-cars-revealed-beijing-auto-show-2024\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Nissan&#8217;s Chill-Out concept<\/a> from last year&#8217;s Tokyo Mobility Show. The image above is from the Momentum 2030 announcement, the little <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">crossover<\/a> we&#8217;ve highlighted has a DRL signature that fits the form factor. Before that comes, we&#8217;ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/cars-concepts\/mitsubishi-aims-adventure-set-sporty-passenger-van-lifted-outlander\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">looking for a small PHEV crossover<\/a> debuting in late 2025 to replace the current <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/mirage\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Mirage<\/a>, which ends production in the latter half of this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Various reports might help with filling in some of the blanks in Mitsubishi&#8217;s Momentum 2030 plan.
