{"id":73935,"date":"2024-07-04T00:03:30","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T04:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73935"},"modified":"2024-07-04T00:03:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T04:03:30","slug":"gm-will-pay-146-million-fine-because-5-9-million-older-vehicles-emit-excess-carbon-dioxide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=73935","title":{"rendered":"GM will pay $146 million fine because 5.9 million older vehicles emit excess carbon dioxide &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/general-motors-co\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">General Motors<\/a> will pay nearly $146 million in penalties to the federal government because 5.9 million of its older vehicles do not comply with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">emissions<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/fuel-efficiency\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">fuel economy<\/a> standards.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/nhtsa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> said in a statement Wednesday that certain <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">GM<\/a> vehicles from the 2012 through 2018 model years did not comply with federal <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gas-mileage-transportation-electric-vehicle-nhtsa-4aaefb855ff7c449c6e4e9e4c69a9847\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">fuel economy<\/a> requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The fine comes after the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/epa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> said its testing showed the GM pickup trucks and SUVs emit 10% more <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carbon-dioxide-methane-global-warming-climate-change-94424de6b22f1f734b1afd6bce8489b2\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">carbon dioxide<\/a> on average than GM&#8217;s initial compliance testing claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\" rel=\"noopener\">EPA<\/a> says the vehicles will remain on the road and cannot be <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">repaired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>GM said in a statement that it complied with all regulations in pollution and mileage certification of its vehicles. The company said it is not admitting to any wrongdoing or that it did not comply with the Clean <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lucid\/air\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Air<\/a> Act.<\/p>\n<p>The enforcement action involves about 4.6 million full-size pickups and SUVs and about 1.3 million midsize SUVs, the EPA said. The affected models include the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/tahoe\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Chevy Tahoe<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/cadillac\/escalade\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Cadillac Escalade<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Chevy<\/a> Silverado. About 40 variations of GM vehicles are covered.<\/p>\n<p>GM will be forced to give up credits used to ensure that manufacturers&#8217; greenhouse gas emissions are below the fleet standard for emissions that applies for that model year, the EPA said.<\/p>\n<p>An EPA spokesman said the violations were unintentional.<\/p>\n<p>But David Cooke, senior vehicles analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists, questioned how GM could not know that pollution exceeded initial test by more than 10% because the problem was so widespread on so many different vehicles. \u201cYou don\u2019t just make a more than 10% rounding error,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also was surprised that the government is not making GM take action to correct the excess pollution or reduce the gas mileage estimates on the cars\u2019 window stickers.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign for the environmental group Center for Biological Diversity, said the violations by GM \u201cshow why automakers can\u2019t be trusted to protect our air and health, and why we need strong pollution rules. Supreme Court, take notice!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court last week <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-chevron-regulations-environment-5173bc83d3961a7aaabe415ceaf8d665\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">rejected a 40-year-old legal doctrine known as Chevron<\/a>, effectively reducing the power of the EPA and other executive branch agencies and shifting it to the courts.
