However, a new research report suggests BYD could steal Tesla\u2019s crown by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-370313\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-closing-in-on-tesla\">Closing in on Tesla<\/h2>\n<p>Although BYD overtook Tesla in EV volume for the first time in Q4 2023, Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/04\/02\/tesla-regains-bev-global-leader-crown-from-byd-amid-tough-quarter\/\">took the title back<\/a> in the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla stayed atop BYD as the world\u2019s largest EV maker in the second quarter, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/02\/tesla-tsla-announces-q2-deliveries-beat-expectations\/\">with 443,956 vehicles<\/a> delivered. Despite EV sales climbing 42% from the first quarter, BYD <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/01\/byd-new-sales-record-amid-ev-price-cuts-top-tesla\/\">sold 426,039 EVs<\/a> in Q2, which was not enough to top Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, a new <em>Counterpoint <\/em>research report claims BYD may overtake Tesla again by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shift underscores the dynamic nature of the global EV market,\u201d the report stated. Counterpoint said China \u201cremains the dominant force in the BEV market,\u201d with EV sales expected to be about four times that of North America this year.<\/p>\n<p>China will hold a commanding 50% share of global EV sales until 2027, according to the report. Although BYD was included, it was placed at the lowest level at 17.4%. Its first electric supercar, the Yangwang U9, was also <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/06\/28\/byds-ferrari-slaying-electric-sports-car-spotted-video\/\">spotted racing<\/a> around the Nurburgring this week.<\/p>\n<p>As it expands overseas, BYD will open its <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/03\/byds-10k-ev-price-cuts-spark-backlash-thailand\/\">first plant in Thailand<\/a> on July 4, 2024. Thailand is a key market aiming for 30% of vehicles made in the country to be electric by 2030. It\u2019s also nearing a deal for a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/06\/21\/byd-huge-mexico-ev-plant-deal-50000-sales\/\">massive factory in Mexico<\/a>, where its first pickup, the Shark PHEV, was unveiled in May.<\/p>\n<p>What do you guys think?
