The law enforcement organization said it had experienced an almost 20 percent failure rate with its 219 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/durango\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Durangos<\/a>, noting that the problems could cost taxpayers almost $4 million and cause weeks of downtime for some vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The Indiana State Police ordered 519 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/fca-let-us-pretend-cops-040000925.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Durango Pursuits<\/a> to take over for their aging fleet of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/charger\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Dodge Chargers<\/a>, but of the 219 put into service since May 2023, the agency has seen 39 of them crippled by a failing oil cooler. Warranty <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">repairs<\/a> can take up to two months, leaving the agency without vehicles for extended periods.<\/p>\n<p>Police Superintendent Doug Carter said he\u2019d spoken with Stellantis about the issues but did not get a timeline for resolution. \u201cISP has used <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Dodge<\/a> as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/07\/24\/2019-dodge-durango-pursuit-video\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">primary police vehicle provider<\/a> for the last decade and a half; it is unfortunate that we have found ourselves in this precarious position. We\u2019re having to sideline brand <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">new vehicles<\/a>, losing out on their value and functionality. The citizens and taxpayers of Indiana are being shortchanged and deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials stated that the oil cooler issue can cause oil to leak into the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/coolant\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">coolant<\/a> system, causing the engine to shut off. Drivers noticed a bad odor and saw smoke coming from the exhaust before the shutdown, and the problem can cause a complete engine failure if not addressed.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to ease tensions, Dodge&#8217;s parent company, Stellantis, will pay for the repairs, even if the vehicles are outside of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/warranty\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">warranty<\/a> parameters.
