Its new electric SUV, Sea Lion 07, was spotted outside of China as the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/byd\/\">BYD<\/a> looks to challenge Tesla in key overseas markets. BYD\u2019s Sea Lion 07 is a mid-size electric SUV similar in size to Tesla\u2019s best-selling Model Y.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-372276\"\/><\/p>\n<p>BYD <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/05\/13\/byd-launches-tesla-model-y-rivaling-sea-lion-07-starting-26k\/\">launched the Sea Lion 07<\/a> in China in May, calling it its first \u201cmedium-sized urban smart electric SUV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sea Lion 07 is based on BYD\u2019s new e-Platform 3.0 Evo, with faster charging and more performance. BYD claims the platform uses the \u201cworld\u2019s first full scenario intelligent pulse self-heating technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even in frigid climates (-25\u00b0C), the platform reduces charge time by 40%, according to BYD. With that, the Sea Lion 07 can charge from 10% to 80% in 25 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at just $26,250 (189,900 yuan), BYD\u2019s new electric SUV undercuts <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/tesla-model-y\/\">Tesla\u2019s Model Y<\/a> in China. Tesla\u2019s best-selling Model Y starts at $34,550 (249,900 yuan).<\/p>\n<p>The based RWD Model Y gets up to 344 miles (554 km) CLTC range. Meanwhile, BYD\u2019s base Sea Lion 07 model is rated at 341 miles (550 km) in China. Its Australian distributor, EVDirect, confirmed two more models are on the way this year following the Sealion 6. In May, BYD <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/05\/15\/byd-unveils-shark-phev-pickup-rival-toyota-hilux-ford-ranger\/\">revealed the Shark PHEV<\/a> in Mexico, poised to challenge Toyota\u2019s Hilux and Ford\u2019s Ranger.<\/p>\n<p>At 4,830 mm, 1,925 mm wide, and 1,620 mm tall, the Sea Lion 07 is roughly the same size as Tesla\u2019s Model Y (4,760 mm long, 1,921 mm wide, and 1,624 mm tall).<\/p>\n<p>Will BYD\u2019s new electric SUV match the Model Y?
