The move would result in \u201csaving the U.S. auto industry from complete obliteration, which is happening right now, and saving U.S. customers thousands and thousands of dollars per car,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the Biden administration doesn\u2019t actually have a mandate on electric vehicles, critics of new air-pollution limits issued by the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/epa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> in March have said they would illegally force automakers to sell EVs.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in the same speech, Trump said <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">China<\/a> should build EVs here. U.S. automakers fear that cheap Chinese vehicles would be what one industry group called an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2024\/02\/23\/cheap-chinese-cars-from-mexico-could-be-an-extinction-level-event-u-s-trade-group-says\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">&#8220;extinction-level event,&#8221;<\/a> so\u00a0 Trump&#8217;s invitation to the Chinese is seemingly a paradox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now as we speak, large factories just are being built across the border in Mexico\u201d by China to make cars to sell in the U.S., Trump said in his address Thursday night. \u201cThose plants are going to be built in the United States and our people are going to man those plants,\u201d he said, adding that he would otherwise slap tariffs as high as 200% on each car to prevent them from entering the country.<\/p>\n<p>The comments are similar to\u00a0<a title=\"Link to Trump speech in March\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/KPZGB\/https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/XGJwCUHVgc0?si=3ABddoD2ZoCuRhpS&amp;t=1953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">remarks<\/a> he made in March at a Ohio rally welcoming Chinese auto companies to build plants in the U.S., without naming any firms. China\u2019s largest EV maker <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/KPZGB\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/002594:CH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">BYD Co.<\/a>\u00a0is looking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/KPZGB\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-21\/byd-mexico-plant-will-create-10-000-jobs-executive-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">set up<\/a> one of the largest auto factories in Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both Trump and Biden seek to keep made-in-China cars from entering the U.S. to protect domestic manufacturers. But the Republican candidate appears to take a more transactional approach when it comes to Chinese companies building cars here. Biden, in contrast, has broadly scrutinized vehicles with links to China, including potentially those made outside the country. The Biden administration has tried to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/KPZGB\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-26\/china-files-wto-complaint-over-us-electric-vehicle-subsidies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">exclude<\/a>\u00a0firms at least 25% owned by a Chinese government entity from benefiting from tax credits. It has also launched an\u00a0<a title=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/KPZGB\/https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/02\/citing-national-security-concerns-biden-harris-administration-announces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">investigation<\/a>\u00a0into cars with software made in China that could compromise the data and safety of US citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s remarks on EVs came just moments before he criticized what he said was trillions of dollars of wasteful spending \u201chaving to do with the green new scam.\u201d He said he would instead direct the money to projects like roads, bridges and dams, though it wasn\u2019t immediately clear how he would make good on the pledge. The Biden administration Infrastructure Law is already doing that.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has made no secret his disdain for electric vehicles, claiming they don\u2019t work and will benefit China and Mexico while hurting American autoworkers. Biden, in contrast, has made the shift to battery-powered cars one of his top climate and industrial policies and has set a goal of having 50% of all <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">new vehicle<\/a> sales be electric by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Both men want to look tough on Beijing as they head toward a potential election rematch in November.
