Elon Musk says that he would be \u2018surprised\u2019 if Tesla doesn\u2019t have \u201cunsupervised\u201d self-driving next year.<\/p>\n

Though, like most of Musk\u2019s self-driving timeline, you should probably ignore.<\/p>\n

Musk has famously predicted that Tesla would achieve self-driving \u201cby the end of the year\u201d every year since 2019.<\/p>\n

Lately, the CEO has been more careful regarding those predictions, but he strayed from that caution on the conference call following the release of Tesla\u2019s Q2 2024 financial results<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Currently, Tesla vehicles with the \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d (FSD) package in North America are using what Tesla calls \u201csupervised Full Self-Driving\u201d. It automatically performs all the tasks related to driving, but it is far from perfect, and therefore, it requires drivers to pay attention at all times and be ready to take control.<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s promise is to eventually make it \u201cunsupervised\u201d self-driving through a software update once it is safe to do so and regulators approve.<\/p>\n

Today, Musk said that he believes this is possible this year and if not, he would be \u201csurprised\u201d if it doesn\u2019t happen next year.<\/p>\n

The CEO is again claiming that it will show regulators that Tesla\u2019s FSD is safer than human drivers and expect them to approve the system for unsupervised driving. This would allow Tesla to turn the feature on in existing vehicles in its fleet.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s for North America, at least. Europe and Asia still don\u2019t have \u201cunsupervised\u201d FSD.<\/p>\n

On that subject, Musk added that he believes those markets will get supervised FSD by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n

As usual, I wouldn\u2019t put too much weight on that prediction from Elon.<\/p>\n

It is better to follow Tesla\u2019s official comments, which are way more cautious. For example, Tesla said today that the deployment is dependent on both \u201ctechnological advancement and regulatory approval\u201d:<\/p>\n

Going forward, it’s good to ignore all of Elon’s timing on FSD and just listen to Tesla’s much more cautious official comments:<\/p>\n

That generally means \u201cwe don\u2019t know for sure when it is going to be ready\u201d. After almost 3 years of FSD Beta, I\u2019ll go with that.<\/p>\n
