But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-11\/tesla-s-11-day-winning-run-prompts-a-valuation-reality-check?srnd=homepage-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg already reported<\/a> earlier this month that the unveiling of this vehicle, expected to be a self-driving car for ride-sharing services, would be delayed to give engineers more time to work on the prototype.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100926865_m\" title=\"Tesla Model 3 Performance\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Tesla Model 3 Performance\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla_100926865_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/tesla_100926865_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla_100926865_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla_100926865_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/tesla_100926865_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/tesla_100926865_s.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tesla Model 3 Performance<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Musk also <strong>did not answer questions<\/strong> during the earnings call about whether the Robotaxi would have a steering wheel and pedals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/23\/24204794\/tesla-robotaxi-elon-musk-earnings-fmvss-steering-wheel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Verge<\/a> reported. General Motors just this week confirmed that its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1143885_gm-puts-self-driving-car-without-steering-wheel-and-pedals-on-hold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cruise self-driving technology<\/a> company would no longer use the Origin, an EV designed without manual controls, for a planned taxi service, opting for a modified version of the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV instead.<\/p>\n<p>Before Musk consistently discussed a purpose-built autonomous vehicle, the executive repeatedly promised that Tesla owners would one day be able to rent out their cars as taxis via service called the Tesla Network.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100876288_m\" title=\"Tesla charging\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Tesla charging\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"683\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-charging_100876288_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/tesla-charging_100876288_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-charging_100876288_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/tesla-charging_100876288_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/tesla-charging_100876288_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/tesla-charging_100876288_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tesla charging<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Musk announced this idea in 2016 and in 2019 said Tesla would provide the infrastructure and support, taking a 25% to 30% cut of the revenue in return. He said at the time that owners would be able to use their cars to give free lifts to friends and family, but that those using their cars to generate revenue would need to do so within the Tesla Network.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is dependent on Tesla developing an autonomous-driving system capable of replacing a human driver. The automaker&#8217;s current Full-Self Driving system is in fact a driver-assist system ranked at Level 2 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability. The misleading name, as well as performance issues, have attracted scrutiny from regulators.
