{"id":74866,"date":"2024-07-26T12:03:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T16:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=74866"},"modified":"2024-07-26T12:03:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T16:03:29","slug":"1143939_volvo-dealers-have-to-sell-plug-in-hybrids-or-we-will-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=74866","title":{"rendered":"Volvo dealers: Have to sell plug-in hybrids or &#8220;we will die&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Volvo may need to lean on plug-in hybrids longer than originally planned<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Slower EV growth may extend Volvo&#8217;s forecast to go all electric by 2030<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PHEVs expected to peak at no more than 10% of global new car market share by 2030<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Volvo is reconsidering a goal of selling only EVs after 2030 amid dealer complaints and softer EV growth, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/europe.autonews.com\/automakers\/volvo-reconsiders-promise-go-all-ev-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automotive News Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker&#8217;s U.S. dealers expect to continue selling 48-volt mild-hybrids and plug-in hybrids well into the next decade, and Volvo is making preparations to do that, the industry trade journal reported, citing anonymous sources with knowledge of the plans.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will have to, or we will die,&#8221; a Volvo dealer who asked not to be identified told Automotive News Europe. &#8220;Volvo has gotten way out over their skis with this EV-only strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100932415_m\" title=\"2025 Volvo XC90\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2025 Volvo XC90\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"768\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2025-volvo-xc90_100932415_s.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2025 Volvo XC90<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the next decade, Volvo will focus on supplying <strong>plug-in hybrids<\/strong> in the U.S. and other markets as it waits for EV demand to grow further, a person familiar with the automaker&#8217;s plans said, adding that Volvo executives are &#8220;keeping their fingers crossed that PHEVs will start to be looked at favorably by different governments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A recent Bloomberg New Energy Finance report estimated that plug-in hybrids will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143918_report-phevs-will-peak-at-10-of-global-market-in-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peak at 10% of global new-car sales<\/a> in 2030, after which sales are expected to fall as <strong>lower battery prices<\/strong> make EVs less expensive. In the U.S., plug-in hybrids made up about 20% of total plug-in vehicle sales and 2% or overall new-car sales in 2023, according to the Department of Energy, but may lose ground to hybrids due to higher costs.<\/p>\n<p>Volvo already fits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142527_2024-volvo-xc90-recharge-recharge-test-drive-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its plug-in hybrids<\/a> into its EV product strategy more comprehensively than any other full-line automaker\u2014even going so far as to mask tailpipes. Although the U.S.-market Volvo plug-in hybrid with the most electric range and highest fuel efficiency\u2014the <strong>S60 Recharge sedan<\/strong>\u2014is going away after the 2025 model year, the automaker will maintain plug-in hybrid versions of its more popular crossovers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100932309_m\" title=\"2025 Volvo S60\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2025 Volvo S60\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"768\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2025-volvo-s60_100932309_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2025 Volvo S60<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The next phase of Volvo&#8217;s EV transition has also hit a snag in the form of high tariffs for the <strong>China-built EX30<\/strong>, which was to be a more affordable, high-volume model for the brand but has now been delayed until 2025. The <strong>EX90 SUV<\/strong> has started production in South Carolina, although lingering software issues mean the first cars will be delivered without certain features enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Other automakers are taking a similar approach. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143884_porsche-says-ev-transition-to-take-years-audi-refocuses-on-phevs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audi and Porsche<\/a> will emphasize plug-in hybrids, with the latter expecting to continue selling current-generation gasoline and hybrid versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143919_electric-porsche-cayenne-to-live-alongside-gas-and-hybrid-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its Cayenne SUV<\/a> alongside an all-electric version into the next decade.
