And, as I alluded to above, Cummins took a number of safety measures to be sure the facility was safe for hydrogen \u2014 which makes sense (you want to be safe, after all). Still, considering all the hype about battery fires, you\u2019d think the hydrogen would be less of a concern.<\/p>\n<p>See how this reads to you:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" readability=\"14.253996447602\">\n<p>With regards to hydrogen, the test area features a series of safety checks. These include sensors placed around the vehicle and the interior of the facility to monitor for fuel leaks. The interior walls are designed to protect test engineers in the event of an explosion, while exterior walls have specially-designed plates to help alleviate blast pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the HVAC system is capable of renewing all air in the chamber more than once per minute, which helps to prevent build up of dangerous gas pockets.<\/p>\n<p><cite>julian buckley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerprogress.com\/news\/new-powertrain-test-facility-at-cummins-plant-in-darlington-uk\/8038252.article\">power progress international<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yikes!<\/p>\n<p>Cummins put more than $16.5 million into its new test facility, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/01\/11\/dieselgate-2-0-600k-ram-trucks-recalled-cummins-to-pay-2-billion\/\">which can accommodate vehicles ranging from LD and MD pickups<\/a>, to massive, 44-ton OTR semi trucks and the UK\u2019s famous double decker transit buses. While many of these only use one driven axle, both front and rear axles can be hooked up to dynamometers. But, if anything is going to convince Cummins\u2019 management that it\u2019s impossible for hydrogen to effectively compete with battery electric (<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/01\/19\/man-ceo-impossible-for-hydrogen-to-compete-with-bevs\/\">something VW Group\u2019s MAN Trucks division has already figure out<\/a>, by the way), it might just be a sketchy hydrogen incident.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s hoping it doesn\u2019t come to that.
