In Poland, Chinese maker Leapmotor\u2019s T03 city cars are rolling off an assembly line owned by Stellantis. Meanwhile, BYD Co. has announced plans for its own factory in Hungary, with another on the horizon in Turkey, and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/zeekr\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Zeekr<\/a> is weighing production sites owned by its parent <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/geely\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Geely<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of China\u2019s EV makers\u00a0is a risk for European auto giants, which have little choice but to strike partnerships and make space for their upstart rivals as they face\u00a0shuttering some of their own sites\u00a0to adjust to faltering\u00a0global sales growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the year, Chery hopes to start production at the former <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NSANY\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\" rel=\"noopener\">Nissan Motor Co<\/a>. factory near Barcelona\u2019s cargo port. It\u2019s also scouting sites for a second European location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re determined to move ahead with our launch team, with our operation in Europe in the short term, medium, and long term,\u201d said Charlie Zhang, president of Chery Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chery and Ebro are targeting production of 150,000 cars a year at the Spanish facility by 2029. Typically, such vehicles are made in cheaper locations, taken apart and then reassembled closer to where they\u2019re sold. The process, common in auto manufacturing, will allow Chery to avoid EU tariffs imposed on finished cars.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is still sorting out\u00a0how the new tariffs will apply to joint ventures that weren\u2019t part of its anti-subsidy investigation. While talks could stave off the extra duties before they\u2019re made permanent in November, China has already started a retaliatory probe into alleged dumping of pork products from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just one strand of a\u00a0wider global trade dispute. The US has imposed tariffs on Chinese EV imports that can top 100%, as the world\u2019s two biggest economies spar over an industry that\u2019s grown rapidly thanks partly to Beijing\u2019s subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has taken a softer stance.\u00a0It needs cheap EVs to meet a 2035 goal to phase out combustion-car sales, but sales growth has sputtered, hit by the removal of some government support. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Volkswagen<\/a>\u2019s ID.3,\u00a0for example, retails at around \u20ac37,000 ($40,150), compared to BYD\u2019s Dolphin hatchback that sells for about \u20ac33,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While China\u2019s EV makers have taken less then 10% of market share in Europe so far, the region is the most lucrative outlet for the likes of Nio Inc. and Xpeng Inc., which have gone from rapid expansion in their local markets\u00a0to\u00a0overcapacity.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese firms need a workaround for European tariffs to avoid sacrificing profit or exposing customers to the pain. According to BloombergNEF, the estimated margin for state-owned SAIC\u2019s MG4 EV\u00a0could plunge from 25% to just 1%. SAIC is in talks with the Spanish government about where to build its first production site in Europe, newspaper Expansion reported on July 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Volvo<\/a> Car AB, the Swedish carmaker owned by Geely, has accelerated plans to build its new EX30 model in an existing plant in Ghent, Belgium, in addition to its factory in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Leapmotor began assembly of the all-electric T03 in Tychy, Poland, at a manufacturing site owned by Stellantis \u2014 just six months after they announced the partnership. Using semi-knocked down kits, Leapmotor will provide EVs that can be assembled at any Stellantis plant worldwide, the latter firm has said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cars assembled from kits sent to Poland will generate gross profit of about \u20ac3,200 per car,\u00a0Jefferies analysts led by Xiaoyi Lei said in a June 17 research note. That shrinks to about \u20ac1,000 for imported vehicles under the estimated impact of the new tariffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an added benefit to the region, localizing production in Europe \u201ccan attract <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">car parts<\/a> makers,\u201d said Ganyi Zhang, market analyst with Upply, a digital logistics platform.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty more\u00a0scope for partnerships in the face of cost pressures including the EU\u00a0tariffs,\u00a0Citigroup analyst Harald Hendrikse said in an interview. \u201cAll the Europeans will be making some sort of Chinese car soon, whether in China or in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Rebranding questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/italy\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Italy<\/a>, Giorgia Meloni\u2019s government is courting Chinese manufacturers, though some of the biggest carmakers in the country have conflicted feelings about the possibility of increased competition in their home turf.<\/p>\n<p>Industry Minister Adolfo Urso traveled to China recently, meeting with EV makers Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group and Dongfeng Motor Group Co.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Carlos Tavares, despite the firm\u2019s tip-up\u00a0with Leapmotor,\u00a0has repeatedly raised concerns about Chinese firms expanding.\u00a0\u201cAll European governments are dating Chinese car makers to come to assemble their vehicles in their countries,\u201d Tavares said in a Bloomberg Television interview on Thursday. \u201cItaly, France, Germany, Spain, they are all dating the Chinese. We are here for the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June, Italy\u2019s antitrust authority fined DR Automobiles \u20ac6 million\u00a0after determining it had\u00a0illegally labeled vehicles from Chinese manufacturers including Chery as Italian-made.\u00a0DR has said it planned to appeal, and that vehicles are only 60-70% pre-assembled in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s logical that countries like Italy are worried about preserving jobs and monitoring closely what is happening in their home market,\u201d said\u00a0Alexandre Marian, partner and managing director at AlixPartners.<\/p>\n<p>But Marian still expects Chinese firms to continue expanding in Europe, potentially by acquiring plants that local manufacturers want to close or sell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese manufacturers are extremely determined,\u201d he said. \u201cThey always find a way around a problem and once they\u2019ve fixed a target, they find a way to make that target.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s electric carmakers are expanding in Europe to blunt the impact of tariffs meant to weaken their price advantage over the region\u2019s ailing legacy manufacturers.
