They&#8217;d otherwise function like the fixed roof rails already available on many vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The deployable roof rack design concocted by Ford appears aimed <strong>specifically at pickup trucks<\/strong>. According to the application for this feature, the roof rack would stow against the back wall of a pickup&#8217;s cab, in the front area of the bed. Ford has a growing pile of patents for features that blend functionality with aerodynamics, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1142627_ford-retractable-fender-tie-down-points-patent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retractable fender tie-down points<\/a>\u00a0and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1141634_ford-reconfigurable-tonneau-cover-patent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reconfigurable tonneau cover<\/a> that could also serve as an active aerodynamic aid.<\/p>\n<p>Ford has also tried to patent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1142334_ford-designing-deployable-bed-fins-for-enhanced-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deployable bed fins<\/a><\/strong> for pickup trucks, although they don&#8217;t appear to serve any purpose beyond cleaning up the airflow around the bed.
