The program aims to repurpose parts of DOE-owned lands \u2013 parts of which were previously used in the US\u2019s nuclear weapons program \u2013 for clean energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>Hecate Energy was chosen through a competitive qualifications-based process for evaluating and ranking proposals.\u00a0DOE and Hecate Energy will undergo a negotiation process for a realty agreement, and DOE notes that it may cancel negotiations and rescind the selection for any reason during that time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The future-solar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/em\/hanford-site\">Hanford Site<\/a> in Washington State, established in 1943, was\u00a0a top-secret location for the Manhattan Project during World War II, where nuclear reactors produced plutonium for the world\u2019s first atomic bombs.\u00a0It sits in a section of semi-arid desert along the Columbia River.<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said,\u00a0\u201c\u2026 DOE is transforming thousands of acres of land at our Hanford site into a thriving center of carbon-free solar power generation, leading by example in cleaning up our environment and delivering new economic opportunities to local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the Biden-Harris administration, nearly 90 GW of solar capacity has been added to the grid, enough to power roughly 13 million homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/29\/california-achieves-100-days-of-100-electricity-demand-met-by-renewables\/\">California achieves 100 days of 100% electricity demand met by renewables<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<p><em>To limit power outages and make your home more resilient, consider going solar with a battery storage system.
