They\u2019re the first to do it with a non-compression anodeless design. Compression has long been an obstacle to SSB success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<p><strong>June 27, 2024:<\/strong> ION announced that as part of a three-year partnership, it would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4200091-1&amp;h=3006391519&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Farpa-e.energy.gov%2Fnews-and-media%2Fpress-releases%2Fus-department-energy-announces-over-63-million-support&amp;a=receive%C2%A0%2420+million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">receive\u00a0$20 million<\/a>\u00a0from the US Department of Energy\u2019s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy\u2019s (ARPA-E) SCALEUP program. SCALEUP aims to help ARPA-E-funded technologies transition from proof-of-concept prototypes to commercially scalable and deployable products. ION is also receiving $20 million in private funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the $40 million commercialization initiative, ION is collaborating with global ceramics, glass, and material supplier Saint-Gobain and semiconductor process and quality control company <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4200091-1&amp;h=2196603661&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kla.com%2F&amp;a=KLA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KLA<\/a> to bring its SSBs to market.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Evelyn N. Wang, ARPA-E director, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" readability=\"17\">\n<p>Accelerating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles requires increasing driving range, reducing costs, and improving safety. <\/p>\n<p>Ion Storage Systems \u2013 through an earlier ARPA-E program \u2013 focused on working toward these goals, and now, through SCALEUP, the company will accelerate domestic manufacturing of next-generation solid-state, high-power-density lithium-metal batteries based on ION\u2019s proprietary ceramic electrolyte manufacturing technology.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>ION Storage Systems has one of the largest SSB factories in the US.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<p><strong>March 6, 2024:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ionstoragesystems.com\/\">ION Storage Systems<\/a>\u2018 anodeless and compressionless solid-state batteries successfully achieved and exceeded 125 cycles with less than 5% capacity degradation in performance. This is no small matter because this isn\u2019t a typical solid-state battery, and this achievement means potential for 1,000 cycles and up in future deployments.<\/p>\n<p>Solid-state batteries are a hot topic because they promise a potentially safer and more robust alternative to lithium-ion batteries. ION\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ionstoragesystems.com\/technology\/\">SSBs<\/a> stand out because they ditch conventional anode materials like graphite for a unique 3-D ceramic structure.
