Codenamed \u201cF74,\u201d the second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe is set to break cover this fall. Meanwhile, a camouflaged prototype has been caught undergoing final testing at the N\u00fcrburgring. It had slightly less disguise than what we\u2019ve seen in the past. Better yet, it was an M Performance version.<\/p>\n<p>Losing the letter \u201ci\u201d from its name, the new M235 reveals its new grille design with horizontal slats. As expected, the kidneys take after those of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/07\/22\/2025-bmw-m135-thundernight-color\/\">2025 BMW M135<\/a>, the equivalent hot hatchback. Consequently, to the dismay of purists, there will be an M badge on the grille. Elsewhere, the compact sedan is also getting the sportier-looking side mirror caps that were once exclusive to actual M cars.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C-YLpiDKEdp\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" readability=\"0\"\/>\n<p>You can\u2019t see it in this new spy shot, but the Audi S3 Sedan rival is also getting a quad exhaust system. Underneath the hood, there will be yet another M badge since the \u201cworld\u2019s most powerful letter\u201d will adorn the engine cover. We\u2019ve seen it on the X1 M35i, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/04\/27\/2024-bmw-x2-m35i-beijing-motor-show\/\">X2 M35i<\/a>, and the M135, so logic tells us it\u2019s coming to the M235 as well.<\/p>\n<p>The car\u2019s design isn\u2019t much of a mystery. We all know it\u2019s essentially going to be an M135 with a trunk lid. Recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/07\/23\/2025-bmw-2-series-gran-coupe-leaks-patent-images\/\">leaked patent images<\/a> showed the design of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe, leaving nothing to the imagination. Prepare to say goodbye to the rotary knob. It\u2019s already gone from the 1 Series, X1, X2, and the 2 Series Active Tourer. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/07\/11\/2025-bmw-x3-configurator-usa-live\/\">new X3<\/a> comes with the same infotainment system yet it retains the physical dial. For greater legroom, you\u2019ll have to move to China where BMW will sell a long-wheelbase \u201cF78\u201d from 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Engine lineup and technology will closely follow the 1 Series, so no plug-in hybrid or electric versions. The spicy M235 should be available from day one with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline unit. Judging by mechanically related models, the four-cylinder \u201cB48\u201d is likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/10\/09\/2024-bmw-x2-m35i-detuned-europe\/\">detuned in Europe<\/a>. The most recent compact M Performance cars have 296 hp on the Old Continent but 312 hp elsewhere. Why?
