Rivian confirmed the R2 will have a charge port on the driver\u2019s side, making it compatible with <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/tesla-supercharger\/\">Tesla\u2019s Supercharger<\/a> network.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-375118\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anticipation is already building for Rivian\u2019s next-gen vehicle. In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/03\/07\/rivian-r2-electric-suv-unveiling-design-cheaper-price\/\">Rivian introduced the R2<\/a>, its new mid-size electric crossover expected to propel the brand into the mass market.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at $45,000, the R2 is nearly half the cost of Rivian\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/rivian-r1s\/\">current R1S<\/a> and R1T models, starting at $75,900 and $69,900, respectively. Despite its smaller size, the electric SUV is designed for \u201cbig adventures and everyday use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brand promises R2 will still have the Rivian essence but in a smaller, more affordable package.<\/p>\n<p>At 4,715 mm long, 1,700 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,935 mm, the R2 is considerably smaller than the R1S ( 5,100 mm x L, 1,873 mm x H, 3,075 x wheelbase). The announcement came at Rivian\u2019s Pasadena Space, where it has been showing off its R2 and even smaller and more affordable R3 and <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/03\/07\/rivian-flexes-its-power-with-the-tri-motor-r3x-electric-crossover\/\">tri-motor R3X<\/a> models.<\/p>\n<p>Rivian is taking the R2 on a tour across the US. Rivian\u2019s CEO said many companies are playing \u201cfollow the leader\u201d with the Model Y and end up with worse versions. According to Scaringe, the R2 will carve out its own segment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Source: Rivian\/ X)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rivian posted <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Rivian\/status\/1821669218259235175\">a new clip<\/a> of its vehicles passing by the front of its Pasadena Space, giving you a good look at the R2 and R3\u2019s size compared to its current models.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>With some Rivian owners already receiving Tesla NACS adopters, you can see why the charge port needs to move to the driver\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>On a few occasions, I\u2019ve already seen Rivian owners taking up two charging spots. It\u2019s usually not an issue as other chargers are open, but I could see it becoming one as the network opens up to other brands.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I\u2019ve already seen a few Ford Lightning owners trying to cram in to charge and can\u2019t help but take up two spots.<\/p>\n<p>Most automakers have already announced their next-gen EVs will have charge ports on the driver\u2019s side.
