Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world<\/a>\u201d \u2013 instead tonight repeated several fossil-industry talking points which show a lack of understanding of how climate change works<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump, for his part, pushed even more severe climate disinformation than Musk, some of which Musk offered mild pushback to, though Musk largely compromised to a position that is still incorrect. It should not be a surprise that Mr. Trump showed ignorance of an issue that he has <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/06\/01\/us-pulls-out-of-paris-agreement-trump\/\">consistently shown ignorance of<\/a>, so it is less interesting to focus on his comments than on those of a person whose personal and corporate mission, for more than a decade, have been to solve climate change.<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, here are some facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The global climate is warming, and it is warming due to human activity.<\/li>\n<li>The human activity that is warming the global climate the most is fossil fuel combustion.<\/li>\n<li>There are other things warming the global climate as well, including the meat industry (both through methane emissions from livestock and through deforestation of the land to grow them and their feed), construction (cement releases significant CO2, though not as much as the previous influences), and others. But fossil fuels are the primary cause.<\/li>\n<li>That global temperature rise puts many ecosystems out of balance, with disastrous results for those ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li>Humans rely on functioning ecosystems for their most basic needs \u2013\u00a0water, air, food, temperature regulation, and so on.<\/li>\n<li>As ecosystems are disrupted, this will make humans\u2019 lives harder and worse, and lead to greater conflict.<\/li>\n<li>The fossil fuel industry spends a lot of money and effort to deny and obfuscate these facts, and their tactics have shifted over time, retreating from a hard-line \u201cit\u2019s not happening\u201d position to softer-sounding, but similarly-insidious, positions that still minimize the importance of the problem or delay action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that we all understand some basics facts about climate change, we must address some of the points that were made.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-co2-is-rising-rapidly-and-is-already-too-high\">CO2 is rising rapidly, and is already too high<\/h2>\n<p>In the call, Musk wrongly claimed that current CO2 levels, and the rate they\u2019re rising at, are not particularly dangerous. He suggested that CO2 only becomes a problem around 1,000ppm, at which point it gets hard to breathe, you get headaches, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>1,000ppm is indeed <a href=\"https:\/\/airqualitynews.com\/health\/co2-affects-human-health-at-lower-levels-than-previously-thought\/\">roughly the threshold at which CO2 concentrations directly affect human health<\/a>, but this is not so relevant to outdoor CO2 levels, rather indoor ones. Indoor levels can be much higher than outdoor levels \u2013\u00a0though higher outdoor levels set a higher baseline, meaning indoor levels will be even higher when outdoor levels are high.<\/p>\n<p>Musk seemed to think that, since atmospheric CO2 is currently nowhere near 1,000ppm, there\u2019s no rush to handle carbon reduction. This is false. It is false because environmental problems start happening much earlier than 1,000ppm. <\/p>\n<p>Atmospheric CO2 is currently 425.55ppm, a bit above the 400 number Musk mentioned. Musk said that it\u2019s rising around 2ppm per year, and that it would only be a problem if that was closer to 5ppm per year, or if the rate of change were increasing.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out both of those things are happening. In the last year, atmospheric CO2 went up from <a href=\"https:\/\/gml.noaa.gov\/ccgg\/trends\/\">421.83 to 425.55ppm<\/a>, an increase of 3.72ppm. This is closer to Musk\u2019s danger zone of 5ppm than it is to 2ppm. And the rate of change is indeed increasing, not staying flat or going down. You can see that in this chart, with its curve upwards:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure data-wp-context=\"{&quot;uploadedSrc&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png&quot;,&quot;figureClassNames&quot;:&quot;wp-block-image size-full&quot;,&quot;figureStyles&quot;:null,&quot;imgClassNames&quot;:&quot;wp-image-375536&quot;,&quot;imgStyles&quot;:null,&quot;targetWidth&quot;:800,&quot;targetHeight&quot;:600,&quot;scaleAttr&quot;:false,&quot;ariaLabel&quot;:&quot;Enlarge image&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-lightbox-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-id=\"375536\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-375536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png 800w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png?resize=150,113 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png?resize=768,576 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png?resize=350,263 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/08\/co2_data_mlo.png?resize=140,105 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><button class=\"lightbox-trigger\" type=\"button\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-label=\"Enlarge image\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.initTriggerButton\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-style--right=\"context.imageButtonRight\" data-wp-style--top=\"context.imageButtonTop\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" fill=\"none\" viewbox=\"0 0 12 12\">\n\t\t\t\t<path fill=\"#fff\" d=\"M2 0a2 2 0 0 0-2 2v2h1.5V2a.5.5 0 0 1 .5-.5h2V0H2Zm2 10.5H2a.5.5 0 0 1-.5-.5V8H0v2a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2v-1.5ZM8 12v-1.5h2a.5.5 0 0 0 .5-.5V8H12v2a2 2 0 0 1-2 2H8Zm2-12a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v2h-1.5V2a.5.5 0 0 0-.5-.5H8V0h2Z\"\/>\n\t\t\t<\/svg><br \/>\n\t\t<\/button><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>These increases are also <em>at least<\/em> 10x faster than the rate of CO2 increase during the Permian-Triassic extinction period, the largest mass extinction event in Earth\u2019s history (when CO2 levels reached around 2,500ppm).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-climate-change-is-about-ecosystem-disruption-not-headaches\">Climate change is about ecosystem disruption, not headaches<\/h2>\n<p>And the problems of climate change are not simply limited to headaches or difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n<p>As should be clear to anyone with even a little knowledge about this topic (or, anyone who read the list of facts above), the real problem with climate change is ecosystem disruption due to rising global temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>This takes many forms, including higher temperatures that lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=drought+climate+change&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\">drought<\/a> or affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateimpacts\/climate-change-impacts-agriculture-and-food-supply\">agriculture<\/a>, sea level rise due to <a href=\"https:\/\/sealevel.nasa.gov\/understanding-sea-level\/global-sea-level\/ice-melt\/\">melting glaciers<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/sealevel.nasa.gov\/understanding-sea-level\/global-sea-level\/thermal-expansion\/\"> thermal expansion of water<\/a> which <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2023\/sc15199.doc.htm\">disrupts coastal communities<\/a> (where a huge chunk of the world population lives), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/education\/resource-collections\/ocean-coasts\/ocean-acidification\">ocean acidification<\/a> as CO2 combines with H2O to form H2CO3 (carbonic acid) which harms ocean life, even perhaps a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-39810-w\">potential collapse of ocean currents<\/a>. This is just the start of disruptions that can happen from climate change.<\/p>\n<p>That point about agriculture is relevant to another complaint of Musk\u2019s, who remarked that \u201cwe don\u2019t need to stop farmers from farming,\u201d which is not a real thing that is happening.<\/p>\n<p>But in fact,\u00a0human agricultural activities, particularly animal agriculture and the use of nitrogenous fertilizer (which is manufactured with fossil fuels), both contribute to climate change <em>and<\/em> suffer from it. Some croplands are already <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2018\/gaef3499.doc.htm\">becoming unsuitable for traditional crops<\/a>, which shows how climate change from unsustainable agricultural practices will indeed \u201cstop farmers from farming,\u201d highlighting the need to move to more sustainable agricultural practices, precisely so that farmers can keep farming.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-climate-is-already-affected-and-needs-cleanup-now\">Climate is already affected, and needs cleanup now<\/h2>\n<p>These effects do not happen at 1,000ppm, they happen much earlier. Many of them are already happening now. <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/11\/only-4-of-tv-news-correctly-connected-hurricane-beryl-to-climate-change\/\">Storms are getting stronger<\/a> due to warmer water, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/noaa-wildfire\/wildfire-climate-connection\">fires are getting harsher<\/a>, and even very cold places like Norway are seeing myriad strange effects going on, as seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrk.no\/chasing-climate-change-1.14859595\">Norwegian broadcaster NRK\u2019s excellent climate change feature which I encourage everyone to experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These effects do not only affect the natural world \u2013 which humans are nevertheless a part of, being living creatures on this planet \u2013\u00a0but affect human societies as well. More environmental disruption will inevitably lead to more conflict, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acq.osd.mil\/eie\/eer\/cr\/cc\/index.html\">US Department of Defense recognizes as a serious national security threat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid these effects, the world needs to limit its carbon emissions, and it needs to do so quickly. The optimal level for atmospheric carbon dioxide is <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/ask-mit\/what-ideal-level-carbon-dioxide-atmosphere-human-life\">between 280 and 350ppm<\/a>, so we need to reduce carbon from our current 425ppm mark, not increase it, to get there.<\/p>\n<p>Limiting carbon emissions will take a lot of effort from a lot of people, and reducing them will take even moreso. But these efforts will only become more difficult and more costly as atmospheric carbon concentrations rise. So, in contrast to Musk\u2019s assertion that we \u201chave quite a bit of time\u201d to confront climate change, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalsigns.edf.org\/story\/fighting-climate-change-costs-far-less-doing-nothing\">the faster and harder we fight against it, the better<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-oil-amp-gas-industry-is-the-main-culprit\">The Oil &amp; Gas industry is the main culprit<\/h2>\n<p>Musk also stated that we should not \u201cvilify\u201d the oil &amp; gas industry. This is an odd statement, considering his history with this industry and his previous statements.<\/p>\n<p>The fossil fuel industry has opposed Tesla since early on, being responsible for much <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/06\/27\/koch-brothers-electric-cars-fossil-fuels\/\">misinformation about electric cars<\/a>, for lobbying <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2016\/12\/09\/automakers-but-tesla-lobbying-block-epa\/\">against regulations that Tesla lobbies for<\/a>, for working to <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/02\/27\/fossil-fuel-industry-electric-vehicle-fees\/\">impose additional costs on electric vehicles<\/a>, and even to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tesla_US_dealership_disputes\">stop Tesla from selling cars altogether<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has called out the industry multiple times<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2019\/05\/30\/elon-musk-tesla-under-attack-fossil-fuel-industry\/\"> for doing exactly this<\/a>, recognizing that this industry is the largest opposition to his company and its mission.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" readability=\"6\">\n<p>\u201cTesla is affecting powerful vested interests. Big auto and oil companies aren\u2019t known for their gentle behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also, as stated in the facts above, the oil &amp; gas industry is responsible for the most climate change. Fossil fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/causes-effects-climate-change#:~:text=Fossil%20fuels%20\u2013%20coal%2C%20oil%20and,they%20trap%20the%20sun's%20heat.\">are responsible for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>. It is difficult not to vilify an industry that causes a majority of a huge problem, that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ExxonMobil_climate_change_denial\">they know is a problem<\/a>, all while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/30\/climate\/exxon-greenpeace-lobbyist-video.html\">lying about their efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Tesla itself released a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ns_videos\/Tesla-Master-Plan-Part-3.pdf\">Master Plan Part 3<\/a>\u201d last year which focused on how to move the world to sustainable energy, using current technology, more cheaply than if we were to use fossil fuels. This could happen without \u201cstarving\u201d everyone, as Musk suggested that vilifying oil &amp; gas would doom society to on the call.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these plans being the centerpiece of Tesla\u2019s strategy since Tesla\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/blog\/secret-tesla-motors-master-plan-just-between-you-and-me\">original secret master plan<\/a>, Musk seems to have forgotten about the current plan just over a year after its publishing.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Musk\u2019s comments overall were not nearly as disastrously wrong as those that Mr. Trump consistently makes, but they still represent a significant departure from scientific understanding of climate change, and a retreat from Musk\u2019s both previous correct statements on the issue, and from the mission that he has previously claimed, and his company still claims, to have.<\/p>\n<p>So the question is, for those who are still invested either emotionally or financially in Tesla and its mission to move the world to sustainable transport to further the goal of fighting climate change: does it seem reasonable that the CEO of said company would repeat climate misinformation, while talking to <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/15\/just-after-his-huge-stock-grant-elon-musk-commits-45mil-mo-to-harm-evs\/\">and funding<\/a> one of the loudest global voices against climate action and spouters of <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/07\/18\/after-musk-commits-180m-trump-says-hell-end-ev-mandate-that-doesnt-exist\/\">EV disinformation<\/a>\u2026 or does something feel, you know, kind of strange about that?<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p><em>One correct thing Musk pointed out in the call is that solar is a great way to get energy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysage.com\/p\/electrek-jd\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EnergySage<\/a>\u00a0is a free service that connects you with trusted, reputable installers in your area \u2013 without having to give up your phone number until you select an installer.
