After <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/11\/17\/vw-2b-trinity-ev-plant-up-in-the-air\/\">scrapping plans<\/a> to build a new $2.2B factory to produce the model in 2022, VW\u2019s flagship EV looks to be even further away.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/unternehmen\/industrie\/volkswagen-vw-chef-blume-verschiebt-e-zukunftsauto-trinity-auf-2032\/100054911.html\">new report<\/a> from <em>Handelsblatt<\/em>, VW plans to begin production at the end of 2032, six years after its original 2026 launch date.<\/p>\n<p>VW\u2019s Trinity was supposed to launch in 2026, but the timeline has been pushed back several times. It was expected in 2028, then 2030, and now it looks like closer toward the end of 2032, <em>Handelsblatt <\/em>learned from company insiders.<\/p>\n<p>The Trinity EV was also expected to be the first Volkswagen EV based on its software-defined Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).<\/p>\n<p>VW is delaying the launch due to slowing EV sales and CEO Oliver Blume\u2019s new plan to cut costs. Grunitz said that the Golf is the \u201cheart of our brand\u201d and VW doesn\u2019t plan to phase out the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to look like a Golf. It has to be affordable like a Golf. It has to be [capable] like a Golf,\u201d VW\u2019s tech boss told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/hot-hatch\/volkswagen-might-retire-id3-when-next-gen-golf-arrives\">Top Gear<\/a><\/em> in January. It would be crazy to let them die and slip away,\u201d at the 2023 LA Auto Show. The electric hatch is expected to go by the ID.Golf, aligning with VW\u2019s ID series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>With plans to pull forward the Golf EV launch, what will that mean for the ID.3? Volkswagen is also reportedly working on a Tiguan-size electric SUV that could go by the ID.Tiguan.<\/p>\n<p>The Volkswagen Golf was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.automobilwoche.de\/automarktdaten\/automodelle-tops-und-flops-im-juli-2024\">second best-selling car in Germany<\/a> last month, an electric model would make sense.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, sales of the VW ID.4\/ ID.5 models fell 44.6% in July, while only 935 ID.3s were sold, a drop of 47% YOY.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/media.vw.com\/en-us\/releases\/1809\">ID.4 sales<\/a> fell 15% in the second quarter compared to Q2 2023. Meanwhile, the Tiguan was VW\u2019s best-selling model in the US in Q2, with over 21,000 units sold. Perhaps Volkswagen needs a shakeup.<\/p>\n<p>What are your thoughts?
