{"id":75904,"date":"2024-08-20T09:04:15","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T13:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=75904"},"modified":"2024-08-20T09:04:15","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T13:04:15","slug":"1144189_ev-wireless-charging-could-catch-on-faster-with-this-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=75904","title":{"rendered":"EV wireless charging could catch on faster with this tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><strong>EV wireless charging has a standard to get positioned for an efficient charge<br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Called DIPS, it enables cross-compatibility between hardware from different suppliers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It also helps set the stage for wireless bidirectional charging<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Charge ports, connectors, and cables may soon no longer be the only typical way to keep EVs and some types of hybrids charged up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the inductive wireless charging industry is finally on its way toward a whole ecosystem of components that will be able to send a charge to vehicle batteries with no physical connection\u2014via an oscillating magnetic field and the principle of electromagnetic induction.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The core of these new standards\u2014on top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130055_wireless-ev-charging-gets-a-boost-single-standard-will-harmonize-systems-up-to-11-kw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unified standard for wireless charging<\/a> announced in 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1104162_wireless-charging-guidelines-issued-by-sae-standards-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">original guidelines<\/a> set in 2016\u2014is the so-called Differential Inductive Positioning System (DIPS), which uses a low-intensity magnetic field with multiple smaller coils. They address unidirectional wireless power transfer, so it might be used in both vehicle charging or in applications that send power banked in batteries back to the home or to the grid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SAE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1141538_wireless-charging-aligns-for-automated-use-in-evs-plug-in-hybrids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalized the methodology for DIPS<\/a> last November. That\u2019s far better than the efficiencies typically seen for smartphone charging pads, and nearly the same as for physical charging connectors when including long charge cables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wireless charging <strong>costs more than than physical charging<\/strong>, but over the long-term it\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1136234_why-wireless-charging-matters-for-electric-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV game-changer<\/a>.
