To keep temperatures within tolerances, the controllers could preemptively <strong>limit power output<\/strong>, GM suggests in the application.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, GM notes that EVs could be equipped with a <strong>qualifying mode<\/strong> that allows for maximum power during short stints. That&#8217;s something GM also discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1142811_gm-drive-modes-for-electric-car-racing-patent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a previous patent application<\/a> published by the USPTO in in April. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1142881_2025-hyundai-ioniq-5-n-test-drive-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyundai Ioniq 5 N<\/a> has Endurance and Sprint settings within its track-focused N Race mode, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1141735_lucid-air-sapphire-test-drive-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucid Air Sapphire<\/a> lets drivers choose between Drag Strip, Endurance, and Hot Lap settings within its equivalent Track mode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1126470_lighter-faster-gen3-formula-e-race-car-revealed-ahead-of-season-9-debut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Formula E electric race cars<\/a> also limit output most of the time, but, by design, also carry less energy than it takes to finish a full race at full tilt, forcing teams to incorporate energy conversation into their strategies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General Motors has filed a patent application for an &#8220;Endurance Mode&#8221; to help stretch range during races.
