{"id":76160,"date":"2024-08-26T12:03:19","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T16:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=76160"},"modified":"2024-08-26T12:03:19","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T16:03:19","slug":"mclaren-ceo-looks-to-follow-ferraris-blueprint-for-success-but-with-no-arrogance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=76160","title":{"rendered":"McLaren CEO looks to follow Ferrari&#8217;s blueprint for success \u2014 but with &#8216;no arrogance&#8217; &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CARMEL, Calif. \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mclaren\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">McLaren<\/a> CEO Michael Leiters believes that the British luxury <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/supercars\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">supercar<\/a> maker can succeed much like <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ferrari\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Ferrari<\/a> has \u2014 but in a somewhat different way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have one element in our brand, and it\u2019s belonging,&#8221; Leiters, who has been at the helm of McLaren for two years after eight years as Ferrari&#8217;s CTO, said in an interview with <em>Yahoo Finance<\/em> during <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercury\/monterey\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Monterey<\/a> Car Week. &#8220;We want to have people here. &#8230; We speak with everybody \u2014 no arrogance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That could be read as a not-so-veiled swipe at Ferrari, given that the Italian luxury <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">sports car<\/a> manufacturer is notorious for secrecy, invite-only events, and only selling <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">new vehicles<\/a> to current or favored customers.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, McLaren is following a formula Ferrari uses to huge success: Make distinctive cars and sell fewer of them at higher prices to create scarcity and pricing power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t want to copy anybody, not Ferrari, not <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lamborghini\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Lamborghini<\/a> or <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/porsche\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Porsche<\/a> \u2014 nobody,\u201d he said. \u201cThe achievement the company has done on the brand and on the product is fantastic. Leiters said the company, which as of March is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a60280768\/mclarens-ownership-change\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">wholly owned<\/a> by the sovereign wealth fund of Bahrain, is now more focused more on the new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mclaren\/artura\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Artura<\/a> hybrid (starting at $238,000) and its 750S supercar (starting at $332,000).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the most important thing is that we are now more, let me say, customer- and product-oriented,&#8221; Leiters said. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to always supply the market&#8221; \u2014 meaning McLaren aims to give the market just under what it needs to spur demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very sensitive to that; we are building up our residual values. Residuals have come have come back significantly,&#8221; Leiters said. &#8220;Relative to other brands, we are recovering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McLaren sold 5,000 cars globally in 2019. This year the figure <a href=\"https:\/\/europe.autonews.com\/automakers\/mclaren-ceo-michael-leiters-chases-ferrari-level-profitability\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">is expected to be about 3,500<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leiters highlighted that the Artura sports car adds significant performance with very little added weight, something crucial in the supercar business. Leiters also said that McLaren may also introduce an SUV, or \u201cshared performance vehicle\u201d as he calls it, that could broaden its customer base.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Formula One success<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Leiters added that the spirit of openness is also embraced by McLaren\u2019s Formula One race team, which he says is the \u201cmost liked&#8221; team on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>The McLaren <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/f1\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">F1<\/a> team is in the midst of a resurgence, winning on track and beating Ferrari in recent months. Ferrari, which was originally created for racing nearly 80 years ago (and started selling road cars to fund the race team), has been smarting from a series of disappointing performances on the track. The concurrent prominence of F1 in the US has helped boost McLaren in its most important sales region.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Ferrari keeps selling its luxury sports cars \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrari.com\/en-EN\/corporate\/articles\/ferrari-financial-results-q2-2024\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">at envious margins to boot<\/a> \u2014 and has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/ferrari-race-receives-a-buy-from-morgan-stanley-1033704980\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">darling of the automotive investment world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leiters and McLaren hope the recent success of its F1 team and a more inclusive attitude towards fans and potential customers translates to sales success at its showrooms.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pras Subramanian is a reporter for Yahoo Finance.
