But Nissan didn&#8217;t officially enable or endorse use of the feature in the U.S. until 2022, when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1137082_nissan-approves-first-us-bidirectional-charger-for-leaf-warranty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved use of the Fermata FE-15 charger<\/a>. Like that 15-kw charger, the FE-20 can be used without voiding a Leaf&#8217;s warranty.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100932456_m\" title=\"2025 Nissan Leaf\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2025 Nissan Leaf\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932456_s.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2025 Nissan Leaf<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The FE-20 boasts some improvements over the FE-15, including <strong>33% more power<\/strong>, an updated design that lowers manufacturing costs, and a <strong>lower retail price<\/strong>, according to Nissan, although the automaker did not quote a specific price.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan also promises a greater ability to move energy back and forth between the car and the grid than the FE-15 which, in a proof-of-concept test at the automaker&#8217;s Franklin, Tennessee, U.S. headquarters helped reduce electricity bills by $9,450 over four years. Fermata Energy&#8217;s own software management tool can help owners achieve these savings by drawing power from a car&#8217;s battery pack to help power buildings during high-demand, high-cost periods.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100932453_m\" title=\"2025 Nissan Leaf\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2025 Nissan Leaf\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2025-nissan-leaf_100932453_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2025 Nissan Leaf<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Other companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1127590_nissan-leaf-as-home-energy-device-wallbox-will-soon-enable-it-in-the-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as Wallbox<\/a>, market bidirectional chargers that could let homeowners use EVs as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134639_american-households-might-use-evs-as-backup-power-with-this-bidirectional-charger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backup power sources<\/a>, but that relies on approval from automakers like Nissan. As with the FE-15, the the FE-20 charger was approved for use with the Leaf after it was proven to meet Nissan&#8217;s own requirements and received UL 1741 certification.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan hasn&#8217;t updated the Leaf in several years, meaning it&#8217;s now the only EV still using the <strong>CHAdeMO fast-charging standard<\/strong>. It also no longer qualifies for a federal EV tax credit, but it&#8217;s still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1144069_2025-nissan-leaf-is-now-cheaper-than-versa-economy-car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheaper than the Nissan Versa economy car<\/a>, in some instances at least. <strong>Bidirectional charging<\/strong> provides another reason to consider the aged
