But it will be another two years before these models are due for their first deliveries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Based on the reveal of its Traveler SUV and Terra pickup in concept versions shown last fall, including prices said to start under $60,000, and executive comments thus far, Scout has laid out some of the basics for the brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scout will, on one hand, offer a look back to the past: rugged EVs with squared-off styling inspired by the classic International Harvester SUVs made from 1960 to 1980. That\u2019s an exciting point, and it opens up all kinds of opportunities that could add complexity or simplify, depending on the end product.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Could Scout\u2019s standout pairing of nuts and bolts and clicky buttons, crossed with the potential of satellite-data-delivered feature upgrades, help make EVs popular with a new group, or will it be the McDLT of electric SUVs?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like quite the balancing act from a technology and engineering perspective, and that\u2019s why Green Car Reports checked in with Scout Motors chief technology officer Burkhard Huhnke last month at CES. There is no current body-on-frame SUV and there\u2019s never been an EV with a range extender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s of course an opportunity,\u201d said Huhnke. The CTO underscored that it\u2019s the first body-on-frame vehicle in the group, the first model with the ladder-frame concept, and the first such vehicle with an EREV propulsion system (a <strong>plug-in series hybrid system<\/strong>, to be dubbed Harvester). \u201cEverything has been developed as a unit\u2014platform\u2014which has the opportunity as a flexible platform to be scaled, maybe, in the future,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur IP has been generated in-house,\u201d said Huhnke, about the EREV system, referring to it as another core competence for Scout. So the engine, the generator motor, and other components will come from elsewhere in the VW Group, Huhnke verified, while Scout is managing it all in a unified system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe operational strategy, it\u2019s completely ours,\u201d he elaborated. \u201cWe cannot build an engine ourselves, but the range extender itself is so charming; you\u2019re using a BEV architecture underneath and just carrying a kind of DC charging system with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huhnke didn\u2019t give any hints about what engine, or type of engine, might be used here from the vast VW Group parts bin. But addressing a potential sore point\u2014ask some former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1082814_bmw-i3-electric-car-rex-range-extender-not-for-daily-use\">BMW i3 REx<\/a> owners\u2014he assured that drivers would have the \u201c<strong>full performance of the system<\/strong>\u201d whether using the battery or constantly charging from the range extender. But Scout also didn\u2019t want to be seen in the same company as models like the GMC Hummer EV, Huhnke let on. It\u2019s a matter of keeping weight under control\u2014which is what the EREV version achieves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cramming in more batteries, Huhnke explained, would be detrimental. \u201cYou can increase the driving range by adding more and more capacity into the battery, and that\u2019s increasing the weight drastically,\u201d he said. \u201cOr it\u2019s maxed out by the existing space of the ladder frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100946538_m\" title=\"Scout claiming 500 miles with in gasoline range-extender form\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Scout claiming 500 miles with in gasoline range-extender form\" width=\"640\" height=\"407\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"651\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/scout-claiming-500-miles-with-in-gasoline-range-extender-form_100946538_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scout claiming 500 miles with in gasoline range-extender form<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Huhnke said that the EREV version\u2014which Scout CEO Scott Keogh recently said more customers were ordering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145470_scout-ceo-most-people-ordering-the-hybrid-because-of-range-anxiety\">because of range anxiety<\/a>\u2014will deliver an electric driving range of around 150 miles, then an additional 350 miles with the range-extender. \u201cSo in total, 500 miles, that should be sufficient; it\u2019s a trade off in between the weight equation and the capacity of the battery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only other fully electric models that ride on such a setup\u2014body over ladder frame\u2014are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145437_2025-ford-f-150-lightning-price\">Ford F-150 Lightning<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142964_test-drive-review-electric-g-class-2025-mercedes-benz-g-wagen\">Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV<\/a> (or G580 with EQ Technology, in Mercedes marketing parlance). The latter fits a 116-kwh battery pack inside the frame rails, while the Lightning fits up to 131 kwh. Scout hasn\u2019t said what size its battery packs are, but it makes clear it didn\u2019t want to go super-sized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GM\u2019s full-size electric pickups and SUVs, as introduced in the GMC Hummer EV, employ a structure that combines aspects of body-on-frame and unibody construction, relying on a thick battery pack to provide some of the structural benefits of a frame. But these models\u2019 curb weights soar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132306_will-the-9-000-pound-gmc-hummer-ev-allow-gm-to-make-more-big-gas-and-diesel-trucks\">past 9,000 pounds<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100946518_m\" title=\"Scout Traveler concept\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Scout Traveler concept\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"656\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/scout-traveler-concept_100946518_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scout Traveler concept<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Scout EVs will be off-roaders to the core<\/h2>\n<p>Scout will also need a new level of traction and stability control systems catered to off-road situations\u2014and Hunke assured that these are taking form in-house together with chassis and propulsion development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to have an air suspension integrated as a suspension system itself (his emphasis),\u201d said Huhnke, which will allow new levels of tuning and reduction of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). And he says it\u2019s how Scout reconciles this with off-roading that will be another core competence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had decided to have this off-road capability, and therefore we decided to use a more conventional approach on the chassis and propulsion system,\u201d he said. \u201cThat means we have one e-beam (an electric motor incorporated into a solid axle), for instance, as the rear axle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How much of all of this is truly being engineered by Scout Motors? Some development is happening within Scout, plus \u201ccompetence in-house to design, simulate, and run durability testing,\u201d explained Huhnke. \u201cOf course we are working together with suppliers. Development has emphasized the use of <strong>AI and digital twins<\/strong>\u2014one of the auto-industry tech buzzwords of the year\u2014allowing the team to test structural details, design details, or engineering changes underneath, in a way that wasn\u2019t possible before without physical prototypes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombining the full compute power in 3D models with a combined AI approach gives us instant results for changes in aerodynamics or structure,\u201d said Huhnke, adding that having a new factory and its higher levels of accuracy will make the most of this fine tuning.<\/p>\n<p>On the way from concept to production-bound prototypes, that\u2019s been especially useful in reconciling the design from chief design officer Chris Benjamin\u2019s team with underbody airflow. Huhnke said that it will also help the team achieve its targeted top U.S. safety ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You <strong>won\u2019t find carbon fiber<\/strong> in the Scout trucks, nor much aluminum. The Scout electric trucks follow a \u201ctraditional materials approach,\u201d said Huhnke, but the optimization approach and simulation is leading to a serious weight reduction. It made decisions to emphasize steel partly based on carbon footprint, he said. \u201cWe are carefully going through the material list and optimizing from that standpoint,\u201d said Huhnke. \u201cIf you talk about carbon fiber, it\u2019s always appealing to be used from a weight optimization perspective, but not from the sustainability perspective.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100948885_m\" title=\"Rivian and Volkswagen Group electrical architecture and software stack\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Rivian and Volkswagen Group electrical architecture and software stack\" width=\"640\" height=\"249\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"399\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/rivian-and-volkswagen-group-electrical-architecture-and-software-stack_100948885_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rivian and Volkswagen Group electrical architecture and software stack<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Radically different, Rivian-based underpinnings<\/h2>\n<p>While the body-on-frame and solid-axle underpinnings suggest a conservative approach to these vehicles overall, what\u2019s underneath connecting components will be one of the most leading-edge layouts in the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the new joint venture between VW and Rivian, we have a chance to use zonal architecture as one of the first brands, and that gives us the OTA opportunity we always wanted to have,\u201d said Huhnke. \u201cSo new features, new updates over a lifetime\u2026we\u2019ll keep the cars fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CTO is referring to the adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143421_2025-rivian-r1t-r1s-ev-lfp-review\">Rivian\u2019s zonal architecture<\/a>, which allows a vast reduction of the number of separate control units around the vehicle, and a reduction of the amount of wiring, connectors, and other associated pieces. With software-based controls for zones, it gives much more flexibility to roll out changes that could retune, refine, or redefine how a core component works\u2014the dream of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145616_ntel-software-defined-vehicle-ev-karma-kaveya\">software-defined vehicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scout has confirmed that its electric trucks will run on 800 volts, and be capable of charging at <strong>up to 350 kw<\/strong>\u2014and that they would support some level of <strong>bidirectional charging capability<\/strong>. Altogether, that might make it more advanced in some fundamental aspects than Rivian\u2019s current R1 lineup while also harnessing Rivian\u2019s more advanced electronics architecture. The VW Group pioneered 800-volt systems in the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, and it\u2019s now in a growing group of PPE vehicles including the Porsche Macan Electric and Audi Q6 E-Tron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100946523_m\" title=\"Scout Traveler concept\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Scout Traveler concept\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"768\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/scout-traveler-concept_100946523_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scout Traveler concept<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But there are lots of details yet to come. Scout will emphasize tactile buttons and controls and won\u2019t bury items in infotainment menus, Huhnke promised. Yet the Scout trucks will be able to both monitor vehicle diagnostics and manage predictive maintenance with cloud-based services, with push updates when required. It also plans to build satellite internet into its trucks, but Huhnke suggested that it\u2019s still working out how to make that a seamless part of the experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two years from now Scout will provide a very different experience versus Rivian models, and perhaps a different experience versus any other EVs on the market.
