Revised to mid-to-late 2021 in July 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 2020 Update<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Announced Launch<\/strong>: Mid-to-late 2021.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reality<\/strong>: Delayed; no production by 2021. Revised to 2025 in February and October 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>February 2024 and October 2024 Updates<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Announced Launch<\/strong>: 2025 (production version unveil by end of 2024, deliveries in 2025).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reality<\/strong>: Current target; not yet launched as of February 11, 2025 and the production version was not unveiled in 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We are coming up on a decade since the original unveiling, and Tesla has nothing to show for it despite not having launched a new vehicle other than the Cybertruck over the last 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>Based on Musk\u2019s last update, Tesla was supposed to unveil the production version by the end of 2024, which did not happen, and then start production in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has basically gone silent on the program other than being listed \u201cin development\u201d without a production location for years in its list of vehicle programs (still the same as of last month\u2019s update):<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-11-at-3.19.11\u202fPM.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-401463\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The current state of the Tesla Roadster program couldn\u2019t have been better illustrated than by this quick conversation between Jay Leno and Tesla executives Franz von Holzhausen and Lars Moravy.<\/p>\n<p>As we have often reported, Tesla doesn\u2019t have a press relations department and doesn\u2019t maintain any relationships with US media other than with a few \u201cfriendly\u201d publications and media personalities, including Jay Leno.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla gave Leno an exclusive look and first drive at the new Model Y, which is not expected to hit US roads until next month:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe id=\"post-youtube-video-1\" title=\"Exclusive First Drive of the 2026 Tesla Model Y | Jay Leno's Garage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vQ6e4-1uuGA?feature=oembed&amp;rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\">[embedded content]<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>During the drive, Leno asked von Holzhausen, Tesla\u2019s chief designer. and Moravy, Tesla VP of engineering, if the new Model Y would come with a three-motor powertrain.<\/p>\n<p>Moravy answered:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" readability=\"6\">\n<p>\u201cWe do not make three, just one or two. Three is reserved for Plaid and the Beast.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By that, he meant the top performance \u201cPlaid\u201d versions of Model S and Model X, which do come with a tri-motor powertrain, and the Cyberbeast version of the Cybertruck.<\/p>\n<p>Then Leno had to remind them that they said the Roadster would also have three motors: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cand the Roadster?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, both executives repeated \u201cand the Roadster\u201d before quickly moving on.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>I think the odds of Tesla launching the new Roadster this year just crashed.
