{"id":80739,"date":"2025-02-26T00:04:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-26T05:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=80739"},"modified":"2025-02-26T00:04:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T05:04:05","slug":"1145847_lucid-ceo-peter-rawlinson-has-stepped-aside-after-gravity-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=80739","title":{"rendered":"Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson has stepped aside after Gravity launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><strong>Rawlinson becomes advisor as Lucid delivers Gravity, pivots to more affordable EVs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CTO of Lucid and parent Atieva since 2013, led efficiency-and-performance push<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Oversaw Lucid Air and Gravity, Tesla Model S<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Peter Rawlinson is no longer the top executive at California\u2019s Lucid Motors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, Lucid said that Rawlinson \u201chas stepped aside from his prior roles,\u201d and will transition to a role as senior technical advisor to the chairman of the board at Lucid, while COO\u00a0Marc Winterhoff has been made interim CEO.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rawlinson was elevated to the role of CEO at Lucid in 2019, but it\u2019s the chief technical officer (CTO) role that he doubly held that\u2019s been especially important. As the engineering wizard behind a lot of what has propelled the company to its technological preeminence, Rawlinson especially has established the company as capable of extracting the most miles per kwh out of electric propulsion systems\u2014even versus rival Tesla. Rawlinson joined Lucid\u2019s parent, Atieva, as chief technology officer in 2013. Rawlinson and design chief Derek Jenkins first presented to a small group, including yours truly, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1106888_atieva-now-lucid-motors-plans-300-mile-900-hp-electric-car\">concept version of the Air<\/a> in 2016, when Lucid became the automotive brand of Atieva.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lucid almost didn\u2019t make it\u2014and might not have without Rawlinson\u2019s perseverance. Ford considered buying Lucid in 2018, then took a pass. Finally in April 2019, with the completion of an initial $1 billion investment from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), things got real and development accelerated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amid Lucid\u2019s cash-strapped starvation era, from 2017 well into 2019, Rawlinson kept a core engineering team and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1127098_lucid-air-electric-sedan-won-t-use-a-huge-battery-for-400-mile-tesla-rivaling-range\">revisited some of the key tech<\/a> in the Lucid Air\u2014what he called the core competence of the company. That led to the breakthroughs like the <strong>900+ volt tech<\/strong> and Lucid\u2019s own permanent-magnet motor design it uses today. In the meantime Lucid had started providing <strong>Formula E battery packs<\/strong> for the entire racing series, which added to the company\u2019s knowledge base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company has \u201cinitiated a search to identify Lucid\u2019s next Chief Executive Officer,\u201d with support from an executive search firm, according to the release. \u201cThe new CEO will help Lucid execute its strategy and prepare for the next chapter,\u201d it stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100699758_m\" title=\"Peter Rawlinson\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Peter Rawlinson\" width=\"640\" height=\"354\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"566\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/peter-rawlinson_100699758_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Peter Rawlinson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rawlinson has held positions at <strong>Jaguar and Lotus<\/strong>, among other companies, but Green Car Reports first came to know Rawlinson when he was Tesla\u2019s <strong>chief engineer for the Model S<\/strong>, responsible for its design and production. Back in 2011, when he was in that role, Rawlinson told GCR that he was particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1053555_five-questions-peter-rawlinson-tesla-motors-chief-engineer\">proud of the Model S battery pack<\/a> and how it fit electrically and mechanically within that trailblazer, which would go on to win all sorts of awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Lucid CEO has managed to hire top-tier talent at the automaker, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1123883_lucid-motors-hires-away-tesla-manufacturing-chief\">Tesla\u2019s former manufacturing chief<\/a> and other top executives from VW, BMW, and Apple, and hold on to them in a way Tesla hasn\u2019t. He kept Lucid\u2019s braintrust in the California\u2019s Bay Area, but it opened its Casa Grande, Arizona, factory in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100941817_m\" title=\"Lucid midsize SUV teaser\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Lucid midsize SUV teaser\" width=\"640\" height=\"445\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"713\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lucid_100941817_l.webp\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/lucid_100941817_h.webp\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lucid_100941817_l.webp\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lucid_100941817_l.webp\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/lucid_100941817_m.webp\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/lucid_100941817_s.webp\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lucid midsize SUV teaser<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Lucid Air has been Green Car Reports\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134472_lucid-air-green-car-reports-best-car-to-buy-2022\">Best Car To Buy<\/a>, and even though it\u2019s a very large car, the Air Pure stands as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1143806_2025-lucid-air-pure-is-america-s-most-efficient-ev\">America\u2019s most efficient EV<\/a>. It\u2019s now delivering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145248_2025-lucid-gravity-ev-test-drive-review\">Lucid Gravity SUV<\/a> and hopes to more than double its vehicle production this year as a result of having the model in the mix. And three affordable EVs, built off a new mid-size platform and with an even <strong>lower-cost Atlas drive unit<\/strong> spearheaded by Rawlinson as key to getting to further economies of scale, are due within a couple years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now, Rawlinson and that tech preeminence remain Lucid\u2019s strength;
