When the rule was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142620_doe-rule-may-encourage-more-plug-in-hybrids-fewer-evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalized in 2024<\/a>, the EPA estimated that it would <strong>cut fleet emissions by 50%<\/strong> by 2032 compared to 2027 levels, and that between 35% and 56% of new vehicles sold between 2030 and 2032 would need to be electric to hit that target. Although a higher adoption of plug-in hybrids would have allowed a lower percentage of fully electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1142737_tighter-epa-emissions-rules-big-trucks-no-ev-mandate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heavy-duty truck emissions rules<\/a> now being attacked by the Trump Administration were announced in 2022 and are 80% stricter than prior standards. At the time, the EPA estimated this would result in up to 2,900 fewer premature deaths annually, 1.1 million fewer lost school days for children, and $29 billion in annual net benefits. But theses rules <strong>don&#8217;t mandate EVs<\/strong> either.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100654003_m\" title=\"Freightliner eCascadia electric semi-truck\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Freightliner eCascadia electric semi-truck\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"683\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/freightliner-ecascadia-electric-semi-truck_100654003_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Freightliner eCascadia electric semi-truck<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Weakening emissions standards has been a priority for the second Trump Administration, which is even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145624_dot-contradicts-itself-claims-cleaner-cars-will-jeopardize-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflicting with policies<\/a> and talking points from the last Trump Administration, in trying to make cleaner cars seem bad.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to emissions rules that could encourage more electric vehicles, the administration has acted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145700_trump-dot-freezes-ev-charger-funding-demands-new-state-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freeze federal EV charger funding<\/a>\u2014something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1145713_automakers-want-trump-dot-to-restart-ev-charger-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automakers aren&#8217;t happy<\/a> about.
