But what got the press really excited? A 1:18 scale model of the R700.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-413906\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Windrose CEO Wen Han has reportedly\u00a0raised his funding goal to $300 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/chinese-electric-truck-maker-windrose-lifts-fundraising-goal-300-million-source-2025-03-26\/\">according to a <em>Reuters<\/em> report<\/a>, as it works to build out new assembly plants in both Belgium and the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/08\/08\/chinese-invasion-windrose-to-build-its-electric-semi-truck-in-us\/\">in a bid to sidestep anti-Chinese patents on its 700 kWH R700 electric semi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I got a chance to sit with Wen (he asked me <em>not<\/em> to call him Mr. Han), and found him to be somewhat different than I expected. For starters, he tracks as American \u2013\u00a0not the traditional Chinese businessman I expected. He studied at Stanford, worked in Connecticut, speaks convincingly fluent Spanish, and loves basketball enough to have bought the local <a href=\"https:\/\/antwerpgiants.be\/\">Antwerp Giants<\/a> basketball team at Windrose\u2019 new corporate hometown. And, sure, there\u2019s some of the typical finance- and tech-bro bravado and weirdness there, but Wen is young enough and charming enough that it comes across as youthful exuberance.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you think of Wen or his trucks, though, one thing is unquestionably true: the man understands that journalists <em>love<\/em> trade show swag, and he showed up with a stout, 1:18 scale die-cast version of the Windrose R700.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\">Advertisement &#8211; scroll for more content<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-awesomesauce\">Awesomesauce<\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s not three pictures of one model semi \u2013\u00a0that\u2019s three pictures of three model semi trucks in the ACT Expo press room. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleantrucking.com\/home\/contact\/15669405\/jay-traugott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Clean Trucking<\/em> senior editor Jay Traugott<\/a> (above, left) got his first, and sent the assembled media into a mild frenzy. <em>Everyone<\/em> had to touch the truck, feel its mass, and explore the \u201canatomically correct\u201d depiction of the Windrose\u2019 electric axles, batteries, and center seating position. The model\u2019s sliding door even opens, giving you a detailed look into the Windrose\u2019 cabin and, if you look \u201cup,\u201d through the truck\u2019s skylight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s my favorite.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-there-were-real-ones-too\">There were real ones, too<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-tiled-gallery aligncenter is-style-rectangular\">\n<div would pay attention to his 3D-printed model semi truck that looked an awful lot like the Tesla semi announced in 2017. Last year, he brought an early production model to the ride and drive \u2013\u00a0or so I thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a real, working truck,\u201d Wen explained (I\u2019m paraphrasing a bit here). \u201cIt was dirty and worn out because we\u2019d been beating on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year? Wen had a fresh Windrose R700 at the ride and drive, and a clean, shiny, and new electric semi in the ACT Expo\u2019s ever-expanding exhibition space \u2013\u00a0and it looked great. The fit and finish, the paint, the interior materials \u2013\u00a0all of it looked at least as good as what you\u2019d expect from something like an International.<\/p>\n<p>And these, presumably, were not the same trucks Joyride, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/04\/28\/windrose-electric-semi-truck-isnt-coming-to-america-its-already-here\/\">an early Windrose customer<\/a>, was wheeling around for photos a few days ahead of the show.<\/p>\n<p>Joyride isn\u2019t alone. Windrose\u2019 board includes Vin McLoughlin, co-founder of J.B. Hunt\u2019s dedicated services business, and Curt Ferguson, former head of Coca-Cola China.<\/p>\n<p>My friend Paul Gioupis, CEO of Zeem Solutions and great admirer of the Tesla Semi\u2019s design and promised efficiency, seems to be a Windrose convert as well. \u201cHave you been in one, yet?\u201d he asked, jealously eyeing the scale model of the R700 I was cradling like a baby as Wen and I walked and talked. \u201cIt\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Windrose Technology R700 sleeper cab electric semi truck packs a 700 kWh battery, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/04\/03\/tesla-inspired-chinese-semi-gets-960kw-charging-from-borgwarner\/\">megawatt charging capabilities developed with Tier 1 heavyweight Borg-Warner<\/a>, and a 400-mile driving range when fully loaded to to its 82,000 lb. combined capacity. Prices start at $250,000 \u2013\u00a0which, when you factor in incentives like <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/04\/06\/what-ev-sales-slump-illinois-ev-sales-outpace-the-nation-by-41\/\">ComEd\u2019s $50,000 Class 8 commercial EV rebate<\/a> and other state and federal EV incentives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesidetrucks.com\/product\/2025-international-lt625-11\/\">puts it on up-front cost parity with something like an International LT625 sleeper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, it\u2019s no surprise that Paul wasn\u2019t the only big fleet buyer with a big smile and firm handshake for Wen, either.
