That mismatch violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, which covers occupant crash protection. A bench that invites three passengers but only protects two isn\u2019t just awkward \u2013 it\u2019s a safety risk. It simply makes it too easy to squeeze that third person in the back \u201cjust that once\u201d without a seatbelt, and that\u2019s inviting trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen will fix the ID. Buzz issue by having dealers install \u201cfixed unpadded trim parts\u201d that adjust the seat\u2019s usable width, and they\u2019ll do it for free, because recall repairs are always free. It\u2019ll probably be hard plastic on the seat to ensure a third person can\u2019t squeeze in.
