This year, the company\u2019s fuel cell is in series production \u2013\u00a0and available now.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-414116\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonda hydrogen is open for business,\u201d says David Perzynski, assistant manager of hydrogen solutions development at American Honda. \u201c(<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/05\/17\/honda-debuts-hydrogen-powered-class-8-fuel-cell-semi-truck-concept\/\">We have<\/a>) the fuel cell technology, the expertise, and the supply chain to power a variety of zero-emissions products, including commercial trucking and stationary power generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company arrived with a more developed version of its <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/11\/19\/honda-deploys-peterbilt-579ev-electric-semi-out-of-alabama-plant\/\">Peterbilt 579EV-based<\/a> HFC semi concept, which is based on one of that brand\u2019s existing BEVs and uses the Honda fuel cell as a range-extending generator for its 120 kWh battery \u2026 or, rather, it would \u2013 if it was ever plugged into a charger.<\/p>\n<p>On battery power alone, the big Pete is good for up to 150 miles of fully loaded range. With the fuel cell along for the piggyback ride, however, the truck\u2019s range climbs to more than 500 miles at an 82,000 lb. combined vehicle weight.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\">Advertisement &#8211; scroll for more content<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-than-just-a-range-extender\">More than just a range-extender<\/h2>\n<p>Honda envisions a world where its hydrogen fuel cell is used in much more than transportation and logistics applications. Honda\u2019s been developing hydrogen fuel cells for nearly forty years, and put its first hydrogen fuel cell car (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honda_FCX\">the FCX concept<\/a>, above) <a href=\"https:\/\/oldconceptcars.com\/1930-2004\/honda-fcx-1999\/\">all the way back in 1999<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it\u2019s put a number of hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles into series production, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/06\/26\/honda-releases-lease-details-for-its-interesting-cr-v-fuel-cell-plug-in-hybrid\/\">including the innovative Honda CR-V HFC hybrid<\/a> that lets you fill the car\u2019s 17.7 kWh battery with electrons at home for up to 29 miles of all-electric driving, then fill up the hydrogen tank for another 241 miles of driving \u2026 and they\u2019re not stopping there.<\/p>\n<p>We had a chance to chat with David Perzynski on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ElectrekDaily\">Quick Charge<\/a><\/em> last year, where he talked us through some of Honda\u2019s hydrogen plans in more detail.
