Last year, over 17 million EVs were sold globally. According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/rhomotion.com\/news\/over-17-million-evs-sold-in-2024-record-year\/\">Rho Motion<\/a><\/em>, China accounted for 11 million, or over 60%.<\/p>\n<p>Even as new models from leading OEMs like Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia are being introduced, China continues outpacing every other country. Through the first three months of 2025, over 2.4 million electric cars were sold in China, nearly 60% of the 4.1 million sold globally.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just electric vehicles. Most batteries that power them also come from China, with companies like CATL and BYD dominating the market.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\">Advertisement &#8211; scroll for more content<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Data from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sneresearch.com\/en\/insight\/release_view\/371\/page\/12?s_cat=%7C&amp;s_keyword=#ac_id\">SNE Research<\/a><\/em> shows that CATL and BYD alone accounted for over 55% of the global EV battery market in 2024. The first model based on the platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/04\/09\/byd-launches-first-evs-with-ultra-fast-charging-starting-at-30000\/\">the Han L<\/a>, starts at just 219,800 yuan ($30,000).<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the smart driving technology. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/02\/10\/byds-most-affordable-evs-smart-driving-upgrade-free\/\">BYD confirmed<\/a> that most of its vehicles, including its ultra-low-cost Seagull, will now include its new \u201cGods Eye\u201d driver-assistance system. However, like electric cars, China is quickly taking market share.<\/p>\n<p>China already accounts for the majority of hydrogen commercial vehicle sales. Toyota\u2019s hydrogen boss explained, \u201cChina is the most advanced in the world for hydrogen trucks.\u201d Why? Hydrogen fuel cell bus and truck sales in China were higher than in every other market combined, at 7,069.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>We are already seeing it happen with electric vehicles. With a flood of new EVs entering China, BYD, XPeng, NIO, and most others are now looking overseas to drive growth.<\/p>\n<p>BYD\u2019s overseas sales hit another record in April, with <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/05\/02\/byds-10000-ev-top-seller-april-going-overseas\/\">nearly 80,000 vehicles<\/a> sold overseas, which is its fifth straight month of growth. In total, BYD sold over 380,000 new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs), 195,740 of which were purely electric.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/automotive-insights\/en\/blogs\/2025\/02\/byd-in-europe-expansion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S&amp;P Global Mobility<\/a><\/em>, BYD\u2019s sales are expected to double in Europe to around 186,000 in 2025. By 2029, that number could reach around 400,000.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Trump administration is alienating trade partners with new tariffs on imports while threatening to end federal incentives, which will only put the US further behind.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s already becoming evident in global markets like Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, and several others, where Chinese brands are quickly gaining a presence.<\/p>\n<p>The trend is only expected to accelerate with new tech quickly advancing.
