The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USTPO) has denied Tesla\u2019s attempt to trademark the term \u201cRobotaxi\u201d. which it has been using to refer to its long-promised self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n

CEO Elon Musk has been using the term \u201crobotaxi\u201d for years. <\/p>\n

At first, it was to refer to what its existing consumer vehicles (Model S, X, 3, Y and Cybertruck) would become once it finally delivers on its \u201cfull self-driving\u201d promises\u2013 something that was supposed to happen by the end of every year for the last 6 years.<\/p>\n

However, Tesla held its \u2018We, Robot\u2019 event in October 2024<\/a>, where it unveiled two new vehicles, a dedicated robotaxi vehicle and a self-driving \u2018Robovan\u2019 \u2013 pictured above.<\/p>\n

Musk referred to the dedicated robotaxi vehicle as both a \u2018Robotaxi\u2019 and \u2018Cybercab\u2019.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the event, we reported that Tesla filed trademarks for both terms<\/a>, as well as \u2018Robobus\u2019 and \u2018Robovan\u2019.<\/p>\n

Now, Techcrunch<\/a> reports that USTPO has denied Tesla\u2019s trademark application for being too generic:<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s attempt to trademark the term \u201cRobotaxi\u201d in reference to its vehicles has been refused by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for being too generic, according to a new filing. Another application by Tesla to trademark the term \u201cRobotaxi\u201d for its upcoming ride-hailing service is\u00a0still under examination\u00a0by the office.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

USTPO notes that other companies and media have used the term \u2018robotaxi\u201d to refer to other self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n

The decision is \u201cnon-final\u201d. Tesla can still appeal the decision.<\/p>\n

Tesla also saw its trademark application for \u2018Cybercab\u2019 halted as USTPO reviews other applications using the term \u2018cyber\u2019.<\/p>\n

Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n

I don\u2019t think Tesla should get a trademark for \u2018Robotaxi\u2019. It\u2019s indeed too generic. \u2018Cybercab\u2019 should be fine though. If Tesla was able to get Cybertruck, it should be able to get \u2018Cybercab\u2019.<\/p>\n

I hope the Cybercab works out better for them than the Cybertruck has so far.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s tough to make a steering wheel-less vehicle works if you haven\u2019t solved self-driving.<\/p>\n
