The RAV4 will now only be available in HEV and PHEV versions starting in the 2026 model year.<\/p>\n<p>However, in an act of greenwashing reminiscent of many things Toyota has done before, it\u2019s confusingly calling its vehicles \u201c100% electrified\u201d \u2013 despite that every single RAV4 includes a gas engine.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-417018\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/three-two-one-toyota-debuts-amazing-all-new-rav4\/\">improvements<\/a> include new looks and trim lines, including an outdoorsy Woodland model (like <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/05\/15\/toyota-unveils-bigger-more-powerful-bz-woodland-ev\/\">the bZ just got<\/a>) and a higher-performance \u201cGR SPORT\u201d model (though, we must remind everyone, that SUVs are not sportscars and will never be sportscars), and higher power from both PHEV and HEV models.<\/p>\n<p>The PHEV model also boasts improved range, bumped from 42 miles to 50 miles \u2013 still lower than we\u2019d typically consider worthy of coverage on <em>Electrek<\/em>, but the number is at least usable to keep the average driver on electric power for most of their daily driving (if they <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/12\/22\/plug-in-hybrids-use-more-gas-than-estimated-dieselgate-whistleblower-says\/\">bother to plug it in<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\">Advertisement &#8211; scroll for more content<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some trims will have DC fast charging, and you\u2019ll be able to charge from 10-80% in 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the RAV4 no longer includes any option for a non-hybrid powertrain. All trims are either hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Previously, it had been anticipated that <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/02\/19\/toyota-launching-electric-rav4-ev\/\">an EV model might join the lineup<\/a>, but it looks like Toyota is just sticking with the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/05\/13\/toyotas-ev-gets-new-name-more-range-and-other-big-upgrades\/\">newly-renamed bZ model<\/a> for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota calls its new RAV4 options \u201chighly efficient electrified powertrains,\u201d but did not specify anticipated EPA mileage numbers for the HEV model, or for the PHEV when operating on gas power. The current RAV4 hybrid gets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/Find.do?action=sbs&amp;id=48937&amp;pubDate=20250419\">39mpg<\/a> (that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/bymodel\/2025_Toyota_RAV4.shtml\">about 10mpg better than the non-hybrid<\/a>), and we would imagine something in that ballpark for the updated model.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 RAV4 will be available in Toyota dealerships across the US \u201clater this year.\u201d Pricing has not yet been announced.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>But the real issue here is the use of the word \u201celectrified,\u201d and specifically, \u201c100% electrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toyota has a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2019\/06\/18\/toyota-push-science-illiteracy-deceptive-anti-ev-ads\/\">long<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/11\/24\/toyota-is-still-greenwashing-after-change-in-leadership\/\">history<\/a> of deceptive advertising when it comes to its electrification efforts. Its lies have gotten it in trouble before, both <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2020\/01\/24\/toyota-self-charging-hybrid-ad-banned-norway-lie\/\">in Norway<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/01\/14\/toyotas-greenwashing-leads-to-record-180m-fine-for-emissions-lies\/\">the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota is also the<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/01\/14\/toyota-the-largest-auto-industry-funder-of-climate-deniers-in-us-report\/\"> largest auto industry funder of climate denial<\/a>, and has consistently ranked as the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/05\/14\/toyota-once-again-ranked-as-worst-automaker-on-climate-lobbying-globally\/\">worst auto industry lobbyist on climate policy worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So its use of the word \u201celectrified\u201d should be looked at with some skepticism, since the company has used it before to confuse consumers into thinking that its vehicles are more efficient than they really are. For some previous coverage on that, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/12\/13\/ftc-complaint-filed-against-toyota-over-its-false-electrification-claims\/\">FTC complaint filed against Toyota over its false electrification claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, Toyota has upped the ante, not just claiming that its vehicles are electrified, but \u201c<em>100% electrified<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of terms that get used confusingly in the EV industry, oftentimes purposefully, in order to greenwash companies\u2019 efforts. EV, PHEV, EREV, FCEV, HEV, BEV, electrified, all-electric, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>But one thing that has heretofore been reserved for models that do not include a gasoline engine is any variation on \u201call-electric,\u201d \u201c100% electric,\u201d \u201cfully electric\u201d or the like.<\/p>\n<p>So, moving from \u201celectrified\u201d to \u201c100% electrified\u201d certainly seems like intentional phrasing by Toyota here. \u201cElectrified\u201d was already questionable, but \u201c100% electrified\u201d is well over the line.<\/p>\n<p>So despite that we should be happy about a step-change improvement in powertrain availability on the RAV4, and the elimination of the non-hybrid model, Toyota just had to play one of its tricks and remind us why they\u2019re the greatest enemy of electrification in the auto industry (well\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2025\/05\/01\/tesla-is-the-only-ev-brand-with-negative-perception-and-its-getting-worse\/\">save one<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p><em>Charge your electric vehicle at home using rooftop solar panels.
