Iconic cues like kidney grilles, Hofmeister kinks, and quad-headlights once dominated every model in the lineup. But those days are mostly in the past \u2014 that\u2019s what we learned in a quick interview with three of the biggest BMW design names in the game today. So, he\u2019s a guy who knows something about what \u201cclassic BMW design\u201d looks like. When asked whether or not we\u2019ll still have BMWs with \u201cclassic\u201d design, Adrian didn\u2019t mince words: \u201cNo, we won\u2019t. Neue Klasse is a starting point for a change in our form language,\u201d he said. \u201cNot only the electric cars, but also the combustion cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of design, Adrian feels the only way to evolve is to continue \u201cmoving forward.\u201d And he thinks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/12\/28\/2025-bmw-roadmap-car-launches\/\">Neue Klasse<\/a> is a big jump. \u201cYou will see in Neue Klasse design something very new, I believe. Almost like we\u2019re skipping one generation, jumping one generation. That\u2019s how new I think it will be.\u201d This is all done without completely abandoning the old BMW DNA, though: \u201cYou can trace it back to our heritage,\u201d he begins. \u201cYou can trace it back all the way to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2020\/04\/05\/the-bmw-1800-2000-sa-series-a-look-at-an-intriguing-bimmer\/\">BMW 1800<\/a> from the 60s. That\u2019s BMW philosophy in a nutshell. He oversees design for the top end of the BMW lineup, from the 5 Series up to and including ALPINA models. And at least part of the reason he\u2019s here at all is Neue Klasse. \u201cOne of the reasons why I joined the company [is] because I understood that there is this courage to reimagine what BMW classic design can be like,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are other legacy brands that are not as courageous when it comes to that.\u201d As a reminder, Missoni comes from Polestar, where he had a hand in essentially shaping the brand\u2019s design language we know today. Missoni also said that they\u2019re already working on what comes after the introduction of Neue Klasse; but that\u2019s \u201cmany years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Missoni also had a lot to say about where electrification and design intersected. You probably remember a time where all EVs looked drastically different from everything else on the road. He does, too. \u201cThere was an effort to say, \u2018Hey, look at me. I\u2019m electric. But he\u2019s also leading BMW M design. But it\u2019s a balancing act from there out. \u201cYou need involve certain departments from the big company in order to make sure that the car drives like a BMW\u2026other departments, you have to <em>not<\/em> get involved, because then it just gets slow and complicated.\u201d It sounds like van Hooydonk circumvented the red tape where he could, but it helps that it\u2019s BMW we\u2019re talking about here. \u201cBMW, I think, is a special company in the sense that everybody inside the company, also the top management, loves cars. They love design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are other benefits to doing special vehicles like this, too. Halo cars make the whole brand more aspirational. \u201cI guess the whole key was that they knew that this is a very special occasion, and doing something in the limited number actually helps our organization also not to become complacent, not to become overly automatic, automated, like a machine,\u201d Hooydonk says. \u201cBecause it\u2019s not a machine on the other end, there\u2019s real people on the other end, customers.\u201d Apparently, most of the presumably well-heeled Speedtop customers never cared about price. \u201cMost of them never asked me what it cost. The \u201clast phase of industrialization\u201d is still underway, which mainly constitutes UI and UX tweaks to ensure delivery of a \u201cproduct that is on point.\u201d We\u2019ve heard of cramming, but this feels a little ridiculous.
