San Francisco-based founder Ahmed Shubber wants to emulate Elon Musk\u2019s success in the electric construction equipment world \u2013\u00a0and he hopes his new, 32-ton electric bulldozer is enough to make the world sit up and take notice.<\/p>\n

Since launching his company, Lumina, in 2021, Shubber has raised more than $8 million and grown the company\u2019s global (!?) headcount to 26 people. That fruit of that team\u2019s labor is the machine seen here. Dubbed \u201cMoonlander,\u201d the first-of-its-kind prototype occupies the physical footprint of something like a Caterpillar D6<\/a>, but packs the blade and performance of the larger, more powerful Cat D9.<\/p>\n

\u201cA D6 could not push that blade,\u201d David Wright, Lumina\u2019s head of UK operations, told the assembled media at the Moonlander\u2019s launch last week. \u201cWe can have that blade full of material, full dozing seven to nine cubic meters of material, for eight to 10 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moving all that mass takes a lot of power \u2013\u00a0but getting that power back into the Moonlander\u2019s batteries won\u2019t take a lot of time, thanks to the machine\u2019s 300 kW charging capability<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you spend all morning heavy dozing and you\u2019re a bit worried about how much juice you\u2019ve used \u2014 well, your operators are going to take a union<\/a>-mandated lunch break, right?\u201d asks Wright. \u201cPlug it in, and in 30 minutes, you\u2019ve put 50% of power back in again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shubber says Lumina is working to raise from $20-40 million for its Series A round to develop the company\u2019s next electric equipment asset: a 100-ton electric excavator called Blade Runner. And, in a truly Tesla-like fashion, Shubber says he\u2019s on track to hit an ambitious $100 million revenue target sometime in the next 24 months.<\/p>\n

And, of course, the Blade Runner will feature state-of-the-art autonomous operating technology<\/a> (because: of course it will<\/a>).<\/p>\n
