But when it comes straight from Jochen Neerpasch \u2014 the man who founded BMW M, created BMW Motorsport, and greenlit the first BMW Art Car \u2014 the tale hits differently. These aren\u2019t replicas or studio props. In his words, it started as a stroke of chance during a time when BMW was limited in where it could compete. \u201cIt happened by accident,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAt that time, we couldn\u2019t race in Europe \u2014 only in the United States. Jean Todt \u2014 long before his Ferrari and FIA years \u2014 reached out to Neerpasch about an unusual proposal. \u201cHe told me there was an art dealer in Paris who had a project. He wanted to run a car in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, painted by an artist. That \u201cway\u201d produced the first BMW Art Car \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2021\/08\/13\/alexander-calders-bmw-3-0-csl-art-car-artists-proof-will-debut-in-berlin\/\">3.0 CSL painted by American artist Alexander Calder<\/a>. The idea was to connect the artist not only to the car but also to the event.\u201d This approach produced pieces like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2014\/11\/25\/bmw-present-bmw-art-cars-roy-lichtenstein-michael-jagamara-nelson-art-basel-miami-beach-2014\/\">Roy Lichtenstein\u2019s 1977 BMW 320i Group 5<\/a>, whose sweeping lines and bright gradients symbolized the road, the rising sun, and the experience of racing through the French countryside at dawn.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t about just painting a car \u2014 it was about capturing the spirit of endurance racing.
