However, not everyone can afford the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2025\/07\/27\/bmw-3-series-price-comparison-2025\/\">$50,000 price tag<\/a> of a new 3er, and many buyers tend to look to the secondary market for a better deal.<\/p>\n<p>After all, used 3 Series models are available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/inventory\/srp.html?inventorytype=used%2Ccpo&amp;make=bmw&amp;model=bmw%7C3-series&amp;radius=6000&amp;sort=price%3Aasc\"><em>Edmunds<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cargurus.com\/Cars\/l-Used-BMW-3-Series-d1512\"><em>CarGurus<\/em><\/a> for as low as $2,000. To put that in perspective, the most affordable new car in the United States, the Nissan Versa, has an MSRP of $18,330. But then, is a used 3 Series a good purchase? The answer is often yes, but with a few critical exceptions. Indeed, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/12\/05\/bmw-n54-engine-pros-cons-and-reliability\/\">N54 twin-turbo engine<\/a> produced 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. Naturally, the N54 engine won plenty of accolades, including the International Engine of the Year title and the Ward\u2019s 10 Best Engines award (three times).<\/p>\n<p>However, as BMW\u2019s first modern mass-produced turbo-petrol engine, the N54 had several notable issues, including high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure. This issue was so widespread that it led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2012\/08\/16\/n54-engine-warranty-extended-to-8-years82000-miles-wastegates-only\/#:~:text=BMW%20Engines-,N54%20Engine%20warranty%20extended%20to,%2F82%2C000%20Miles%20(Wastegates%20Only)&amp;text=In%202010%2C%20BMW%20was%20hit,Fuel%20Pumps%20and%20turbo%20chargers.\">class-action lawsuit<\/a> against the company. BMW\u2019s cost-cutting on the third-generation 3 Series was evident in its poor-quality interiors and cooling system problems. However, the sixth-generation 3er was quite controversial among enthusiasts, as its increased focus on luxury, technology, and comfort was seen as a dilution of BMW\u2019s performance DNA. Plus, the 2012-2015 320i and 328i models with the N20 engines were prone to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2025\/06\/08\/mw-n20-engine-reliability-maintenance-tuning-guide\/\">durability problems<\/a> (timing chain issues, oil leaks and turbo longevity).<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, instead of the F30, it\u2019s likely a better value proposition to pay the premium for a used G20.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Generally speaking, BMW is well-regarded for its quality and dependability. Case in point: in J.D. Power\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdpower.com\/business\/press-releases\/2025-us-vehicle-dependability-study-vds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Vehicle Dependability Study<\/a> (VDS), the Munich-based automaker received an above-average rating (189 problems per 100 vehicles) and finished ahead of Tesla (209 PP100 vehicles), Mercedes-Benz (243 PP100 vehicles) and Audi (273 PP100 vehicles).<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, owning a BMW outside of its warranty period can be costly and frustrating. The aforementioned E36, E90, and F30 models are often best avoided.
