Now the California-based auto startup is laser-focused on its second act, a <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/711446\/rivian-r2-suv-revealed\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22711446%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22rivian-r2-suv-revealed%22%7D\">more affordable R2 crossover<\/a> that should unlock a vast new customer base. But does that mean Rivian is done with pickups?<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/insideevspodcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview on the Plugged-In Podcast<\/a> this week, I asked Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe: Does Rivian plan to make a smaller pickup truck based around the R2 platform? He didn\u2019t commit to the idea but didn\u2019t rule it out either, saying that there may be many different versions of the R2 down the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, we haven\u2019t announced anything, but\u2026 it doesn\u2019t take a huge amount of imagination to think of, like, if there\u2019s R2 what are the other R2 variants?\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we sort of hinted at that with R3, where we did an R3X. You could imagine X versions, you can imagine other versions.\u201d<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><iframe allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-u94GAmyWWg?si=FUj-rHpiX0fMzNzl\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" loading=\"lazy\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>When Rivian unveiled the R2, a baby version of its R1S SUV, it also trotted out the R3X in a surprise \u201cone more thing\u201d moment. <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/711584\/rivian-r3x-performance-offroad-focused-electric-crossover\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22711584%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22rivian-r3x-performance-offroad-focused-electric-crossover%22%7D\">The R3X<\/a> is a souped-up, rally-inspired version of the small R3 hatchback set to arrive sometime after the R2 launches in 2026. Scaringe\u2019s comments suggest that we could see an X version of the R2, along with other variants\u2014like maybe an R2T.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, electric pickup trucks from Rivian, Ford and General Motors have been large and expensive, leaving a wide opening to any automaker that can deliver a more compact, cheaper option. A few of those are on the way. That, as Scaringe explained in our wide-ranging interview, is \u201ccritical\u201d for growing Rivian\u2019s business and unlocking economies of scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, as I described it before, the focus of the business is on R2,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s, we think, the biggest segment. It\u2019s the most broadly appealing. He declined to elaborate on exactly what\u2019s in store and said those models are \u201cvery much conceptual\u201d right now.
